Should sell My 87 930?
I've had my 87 930 for a over a year. I have been very happy with her.
My transmission needs a rebuild 1 gear grinds when going in and sometimes when I shift hard from 1 to 2 she'll grind a little too.
So I have looked into having my transmission rebuilt. Than comes the question should I shorten the gear ratios to increase acceleration. Which I'm told make the car feel as if you have added 100hp and 100 torque too. as I understand it gets very expensive 5k - 7k, if not more depending on how crazy you go.
Than comes the question of a full engine rebuild since i have the motor and tranny out. And of course the discussion always leads to EFI which adds a whole other level of investment to the car.
The net net is transmission rebuild rebuild 5 - 7k
engine rebuild and EFI 15 -20k on the low side .... if I sold my car and added a few bucks I could buy a late model Porsche turbo or possibly a Ferrari or even a Lambo ...
I don't know what direction to go... keep the Porsche and redo the engine and tranny or sell it and buy something newer more flashy....
HELP Please chime i'd appreciate your opinions, experiences and insights

930's are going up in value, 996TT's are going down, 993TT's have been steady for some time now and very sought after, the same for 964 3.6L Turbo's. The choice is really up to you, arguments can be made for all of the above. One other thing and something only you can answer: There are differences in ownership types, what type of an owner are you?

My advice.....keep the car if you like it, spend what it takes to rebuild the tranny so it shifts smoothly (keep it stock gearing....I think you can expect around $3K- but that might be with you doing the labor if you're so inclined and capable). Unless the motor needs it, don't do the rebuild as you'll never get the money back in a sale. Rather, make the car shift and drive well and enjoy it, or sell it later before adding too many miles if you have your heart set on something newer.
Personally, you're asking the wrong crowd to help you decide. We are all most likely to say "what are you, out of your F'ing mind or being just plain stupid and blasphemous to our heritage!!??

Agree with Mark.
I would be very realistic in the cars potential, and what it's not.
I would rebuild the stock tranny, you'd have to do it or discount it that much anyway to sell it. No geering, leave it stock.
Only tear down the engine if youhave to, if it ain't broke, don't fix it so to speak.
I would not go crazy with mods, keep them simple, bolt ons/offs. Keep within the constraints of the CIS.
There is nothing like a 930. A 993tt is a lot more money and just as expensive to keep on the road. A 996tt has squat for resale, is out of warranty and expensive to fix. The 997tt is a great car, but a lot more money.

Thank you guys for your thoughts... I love my 930 it is a classic Porsche.
You guys have re-confirmed my original thoughts just keep it simple rebuild tranny to stock and forget efi.
I can easily spend what the car is worth in engine and tranny mods... to me it isn't worth it.
thanks again

Your trans has to be pretty bad to require 7k worth of parts. May just need syncros and dog teeth.
If it was me I would keep it stock and if I had a major engine mishap I would build it back to stock

The 930 is the coolest. May not have the big power of the 997 or the new models but who cares. Requires lot of my attention canyon carving and the limits are high.
A real driver's car for someone who actually loves and appreciate one of the finest driving experience.
Whatever you do to the car you'll always end up with one of the prettiest and classic turbo IMO.
Keep it.

I think this board is a little biased but yeah keep it, its a modern classic. Curious on your mileage, usually these trannys are bullet proof. Previous owner must of been mash'in pretty hard.

88k on the clock - i'm the 3rd owner. Previous owner was an avid Porsche nut too! He owned it for 14 years. Loads of paper work on the car. I gotta say my car is in great condition, now I say that without comparing it to other 930s so with all due respect. My interior is probably a strong 8 out of 10 and the exterior is 7 or 7.5 out of 10.
I raced my friend several weeks back he has a 2005 Viper and we did a rolling start @ 50mph to about 125 ish 2 out of 3 - I held him off by at least 1/2 a car. He and I were both impressed with my car - considering he just dumped 30k in intake and coil pack upgrades on the Viper.
