Default Spec Clutch

Hi Guys,

I am in the process of getting my Transmission rebuilt. We have opened up the Box to find the usual 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear syncros worn out. everything else looks ok. it will get new syncros seals and gaskets plus sliders. i searched through as many web pages and old posts but couldn't find a lot of info on clutches. i was not keen to go overboard with a full race multi plate clutch that would be a pig to drive in Traffic. i have opted for a SPEC stage 3+ clutch package including 7lbs alloy fly wheel. has any one had any experience with such a clutch?

keen to hear about any experiences, coments.

ps will post transmission pics shortly.

Mondragon...

I don't know anything about them but what I see looks nice. I have puck type KEP's in my 930 and the race car. They clamp like a son of a bitch but not great for a street car.

It seems as though you've already committed to a clutch package, so any comments wouldn't be worth much. You've chosen a stage 3, which must mean that your build is somewhat extreme and needs the extra gripping power. I'm sure it will work fine for you.

As to searching for info, this forum should be full of insight....and if not here, then Pelican has a boat-load of experience driven opinions. Personally, I went with KEP (Kennedy Engineered Products) stage 1 PP for my measily 370 hp application. It's just perfect for my use. I kept the stock flywheel and just had it turned and trued.

Light flywheels are great for the track but not the best on street because they require more throttle for cruising as the heavier mass on stock flywheels acts like an energy storage device to keep the car cruising along. Nothing wrong with alloy flywheels - they just cost more to run.

Got My Car back on Friday, i must say the gear box feels great. can't say the same about the clutch. the Spec Clutch was the wrong decision. is shudders violently on take off in first gear. i have read a few forums that say it needs 500 miles to bed in. that's all ill give it before it comes out again and goes in the rubbish. first impression is that it is not street drivable. it defiantly clamps and holds all the HP my engine makes but I would park the car if I hit traffic. Recommendation DO NOT BUY A SPEC CLUTCH if you want to drive on the street. ill let you all know what happens after 500 miles.

KEP!!!
I did search about 930 clutches and the best choice is KEP. SPEC clucth is a better choice for the track for the Porsches.

Eddie Bello does use SPEC clutches in his 911.

If the clutch doesn't improve on the street ill ditch it for something else. what's a KEP worth out of interest?

You can't feather those things. I have found that you need to engage at idle right as you are giving it gas.

OK,
So, if you have a stock 930, well, with a 1 BAR spring and a ungraded intercooler, what replacement clutch would you go with? I too am about to replace the syncros and clutch. Just street driven (with spirit).
Thanks all.

I chose a stock clutch for mine when I replaced it; it seems to work just fine on a mostly stock engine.

Just my opinion but.......

I'd call Chris at Turbokraft, he will point you in the right direction, regardless as to what your HP output is vs. where/how you drive the car.

I did all the usual searches about clutches as well, found too many opinions and too little practical information. Everybody has a slightly different scenario, so there is no real "cookie cutter" choice.

Again just my .02 worth

Mark

P.S. I went with a Sachs sport light weight clutch & stock flywheel, max hp rating around 450 if I recall correctly. Could not be happier, the car is street only.
