Default Axel CV Gaskets

Ready to install my rebuilt engine and will be installing new CV joints. My PET diagrams show the gasket between the CV and the drive flange on the tranny. It does not show a gasket between the CV and the boot flange. Is this correct? Is the metal to metal seal good enough between the CV and the boot flange to prevent the grease from flying out? If so why isn't it good enough for the CV to tranny flange? Hope someone has the answer as I will be receiving my new CV's in a day or two. Thanks for the help.

My PET diagram does not show a "metal cap". It appears to be just the boot flange up against the CV and a gasket between the CV and the transmission flange. Do you know where I could find a better detail on this? Looks the same on Pelican's diagram also. Thanks for the help.

Not sure what year 930 you have, but my 86 does not have any gaskets.

My 930 is 79. I have never seen the metal caps before. Either they were removed by the previous owners or they never existed. I have not seen the cap on my PET diagram or Pelican's. I wonder if this was a modification on the newer 930's. Vinnie, thanks for the pictures. I will see if I can locate the part.

Question CV gasket update

Checked out Pelican and they show 85-89 turbos CV's with the metal cap between the CV and the transmission flange. The older 930 show a gasket in this position. Also state 4 required(assume 1 per CV). So I still question why there is not a need for a gasket between the boot flange and the CV joint.

part # 930 332 297 00 X 4 is the gaskets you need.....
its in pet....1979, 501-00, #19....turbo axle with gaskets...
that diagram shows all you need, no other gaskets between the
boot flange and c/v joint itself...vinnie

Default Thanks, now for the break in.

Thanks Vinnie. Now to see if the new engine will start, run and not leak. Any suggestions for breaking in the engine. New Mahle P&C's, bearings, chains, valves, guides etc. I have read Wayne Demsey's book on the subject but his approach sounds over the top.

everyone has their own way of doing that proceedure....good charged battery, full of oil, fresh fuel filter, fresh fuel....i like to just get them started, i dont like using the starter to pump oil through out the motor, rather the motor do that job. start up the motor, idle, oil pressure, no leaks, runs on all cylinders.
couple of mintues of running and i like revving the motor making sure all is good...to me, if a motor is put together correctly, it will be fine, if a motor is put together wrong, it will come apart....breaking in a broken motor will always fail....i keep the breakin simple....

Default Thanks for your procedure.

Vinnie, thanks again for your input. I will be firing up in a day or two. Using non-dertergent 30w to start and then will which back to Mobil 1 after 1000mi or so.
