More efficient burning of fuel charge, better volumetric efficiency, more HP. However, I think this could be more readily achieved today with better spark plugs and aftemarket ignition components. It's considered very old school in racing circles.
Not sure what the advantage would be on a pure street car, seems like a great expense for minimal gains, no?
Others please chime in

A better and faster burn, and less advance. Maybe slightly more power. I run a 3.5 twin plug w/12 plug distributor and twin stock CDI boxes in the DP, and a 3.4 twin plug w/Eletromotive crank fire in the '75 Carrera x track car/now street car. Does look cool.

I think all those points could be achieved with stronger ignition components (msd for ex), rather than drilling and tapping your cylinder heads for a second plug.
