Quick Question on tranny
I know the answer but just to confirm. The 87 turbo was the first year of the G50 tranny. The 86 had the 915...correct?
The 89 was the only year of the G50/50 5speed.
The reason I ask is that I found an 86 and 87 to buy. I am going with the 87.
TIA

You are confusing the 930 (911 Turbo) with the regular 911 Carrera. The 930 used a 930 transmission all the way through 88, 89 was the only year a g50/50 was used, and was the only g50 trans ever used on a 930. There was a RUF 5spd available, which was basically a 930 trans with different gears and a new 1st in a dogleg position. There will be no difference in the 86 and 87 930 trans if they are both factory, go for the car with the better history and options you like.

Nope, 86 and 87 930 drivetrains are identical, as is their suspension. There are a few trim differences (rear plate between tail lights, windshield antenna routing, minor options, and a few different colors). Unless one is a RUF or has been modified, they both will have a 930 transmission.

The whole torsion tube is different in an 89 930 to accommodate the G50, totally different to all previous years. Fitting a G50 in any 930 up to and including 88 is a big job, and some use the G50 3.2 Carrera 'center section' of the torsion tube, as it has the necessary kink in it to allow the G50 to fit, but it's a lot of effort, lots of cutting and welding

Me thinks you misunderstood my point. I didn't refer to the drive train. My understanding is that the tub is the same, wherein the shortened torsion tube section is no different between the Carrera, Turbo-look and Turbo. Being shortened to accomodate the G50 in the Carrera and the Turbo-look it would also do the same for the Turbo in the event the owner wanted to install a G50, as we know Porsche did end up doing in 1989.

Also for further ID info - as posted by "VenezianBlau 87" many moons ago (I keep this for reference):
The number to look for should be stamped on a plate just forward of the drain plug on the bottom where the gearbox mates to the transmission case.
Based on the Carrera factory manuals:
The number to look for should be stamped on a plate just forward of the drain plug on the bottom where the gearbox mates to the transmission case. The manual gives the following example "Transmission Numbers". I added the spaces:
G5000 1 J 00903
*G5000 relates to the "transmission type". "G50" and "950" are used synonymously according to the manual.
*The manual states that "1" indicates a normal differential; "0" = no differential; "2" = ZF limited-slip differential.
*"J" refers to 1988; "H" refers to 1987; "K" refers to 1989.
*The last five digits are the "serial number".
