Default Body Color vs Engine Compartment and Wheel Well Color

Hi, for a 1979 930 should the engine compartment and wheel well paint color match the body color if it is original. Thanks!

I'm not sure I believe this... While I agree the engine compartment is always painted body color, the wheel wells, at least on earlier cars is black. I know that to be the case on my '76 and '77. I remember a heated discussion at the PCA Parade concours in 2009 over that issue on a later ('87??) 930. Part of what I remember hearing was that on earlier 930's the fender flares were butt-welded to a standard fender panel and later production incorporated the flare into the panel. The wheel wells of cars with the butt-welded flares were finished in black paint while the later cars' were body color. As far as addressing the original question about a '79 I'm not certain but would speculate that they were still welding flares to the existing fender and therefore should be black.

I just looked and the engine bay is the body color on my '79 and easily visible. Wheel wells look to be same color with a protective coating applied over it. The coating is light in some places and the body color shows through but mostly it just looks like the blackish coating in the wheel wells. I don't believe the coating is just years of dirt/grime...appears to have been applied to the car.

I think some of the concusion is in that the early cars (76-79) haqd the rear flairs spot welded on the SC bodies as the decision had not been made to make the 930 a production model.

My first 930 was a 1978 and had a black coating in all four wheel wells, I know as I REMOVED every bit of it for the Cinni. parade back in 92? It was not pleasent. When the work was done, the body color shone through. Also back in the day, they still undercoated, dealer option, the car.
