Groovie,

Thanks for reminding me about the McQueen '76. By the time I learned of the auction I had missed it.

Hell of car and amazing piece of history !

I wonder if Porsche made Steve McQueen pay for the P.T.S. Grey upcharge ?

Porsche just whacked me for $13,000 for my requested color on my '11
GT3RS which I've now waited a year for ! ! ! ! !

I have never seen a Slate Grey Turbo Carrera or Turbo but I have seen a Slate Grey '92 America Roadster which was a P.T.S. request.

Pictures when you find one
I owned a slate gray c2 Turbo 1991, Will post some pics tomorrow AM

In 79 there was a color called Charcoal Grey metallic that is very close to the current Slate Grey.

Dave,

You are correct, but ...........

I own a '79 Turbo (chassis #0960) which is Charcoal Grey Metallic. My window sticker lists this color as a "color to sample" option for $495. This was not a stock color for '79.

I also have the 1979 dealer color chart that lists 20 standard colors available for that year and Charcoal Grey Metallic is not one. Any other documented colors for that year other than the stock 20 would have been optional by request.

Phil (pu911rsr on RL) also has a Charcoal Grey Metallic '79 Turbo.

Beautiful color and almost identical to Jayhawks '91 C2 Turbo. Even though they appear to be the same color ('79 &'91), the name was rebadged "Slate Grey Metallic" for '91. This color is nothing like the early '60s Slate Grey which was non-metallic.

The original Slate Grey has more green than the '79 Charcoal Grey Metallic or '91 Slate Grey Metallic as evidenced by the McQueen photos in this thread ........ no comparison !

I sometimes think that the metallic colors loose the richness of non-metallics.

I really like my Charcoal Grey Metallic '79 (two owner-1,700 miles) but the color doesn't hold a candle to the original Slate Grey that Porsche offered in the '60s.

Oh well ..........

I always loved the early 930's in Green. When I was a kid I will never forget seeing a lime green '76 930 in the customer pick up service area at Holberts Porsche in PA.

Back in the seventies there were a number of cool colors that the 930 looked great in. The first one I ever rode in was a '79 that was Cashmere beige with brown interior and the rims were special ordered painted to match the color of the car. When I was a kid my friends father who was a car dealer brought it home and gave us rides in it. I will never forget the feeling of seeing that car just sitting in his driveway. I even enjoy the fresh exhaust smell of the the car after its turned off and in the garage

I own a "Paint to Sample' '79 930 that is "Blood Orange" all original with 5,000 miles. I am also looking for a mint all original '76 or '77 930.

Default Original 1976 930

I am new to rennlist and have been browsing the forum for about a year. In February, I bought an original 76 930 and moved it from Washington State to Texas. I bought it from the 2nd owner and it has 51,000 miles. The only modification that it has is there is a boost guage instead of a clock. Once warmed up, the car drives like a dream. I truly love this 930. I think it is the last of the 1976's made (VIN - 9306800530). I am curious of the paint color. I am sure it is the original paint. Is this Slate Grey like McQueen's? I have been driving it every nice weekend and am a little worried about depreciating it with all the miles I am putting on it. This is the link http:/s1088.photobucket.com/albums/i322/dalama3/ Thanks.

Guys,

Nice to see some early original Turbos! Baron, can't get enough of your blue car, would love to see some pics of your other 76 as well. The silver car is a beaut, can't go wrong with a silver 930. Obdel#1 beautiful car! Cool that it is #00530. To me it looks like a metallic grey, while the McQueen car I believe is a solid non-metalic grey. Thank's for sharing ...

Jay72, let's see that blood orange '79, maybe start your own thread so Baron can focus on his search.
