Default Collectible Cars....by Jay Leno

While he does not address the Porsche Cars in particular, he has some guidelines that are pretty clear cut for investing in cars. Using Jays rules would pretty much rule out most Porsche Cars (x a few) as collectible.

Would be interesting to see Jerry Seinfelds philosophy on the Porsche Cars.

He is saying buy what you like and enjoy it. Then he goes into the oddities of the market. A 930 is a wild ride without doubt. Compared to the 997 Turbo it is far more elemental and what I consider fun. There are no electrical nannies, computers,or other add -ons that can confuse the driving experience. Most guys I meet that have the new Turbos always miss the 930 they once owned ("why did I let that car go?")Do I think the value of 930s will rise...absolutely. If you asked Jay Leno he would probably just say- if you like it buy it and drive it.Mine is modified to a certain extent but still has CIS and it is faster than 99% of the cars on the road and the other 1% are usually parked in a garage or just another new Z06Vette.

When I started my search for a 930 I had planned on getting a garage queen, however, this gave me a different perspective on what I really wanted out of the car......and it came down to...'I really do want to drive the damn thing ! " So for me it helped confirm the WHY part of buying.

They are worth all the money from a pure fun standpoint.

I bought my '79 22 years ago for about $40m and have put 50K+ miles on it. It is now worth 25-30M - and has been a whole lot of fun over that timeperiod. There is nothing else I have had over that timeframe that has given me that kind of bang for the buck (the wife not-withstanding!).

Sure, it might become a collectible someday; in the meantime I'll use it ! What price fun??

There are lots of 911s, 930s, etc that were produced over the years. The cars that will truly be "collectible" or the survivors, will be the all original cars. There will be plenty of Porsches, 911s, 930s, 997s etc. that have been modded and it will be very costly (maybe too costly in some cases) to convert them back to their original condition. If there are cars that will fetch big money, it will be the cars with original Fuchs (not cars sitting on 996/993 or aftermarket wheels), original interiors (not aftermarket racing seats), and original motors not modded ones. If your desire is to have a collectible, then stick as close to original as possible, but buy knowing there were thousands of these cars produced and it may never make you money, particularly if values remain constant because then you have to consider maintenance, insurance etc.

There are lots of great Porsches out there, but only buy one if you are going to enjoy owning it. Most cars are not great investments.

Best regards,
Dino
