Default 1st Post: Questions About The 930/935

Recently joined RL to support the fabulous and wealth of information on this site. I am ((was) none in the stable right now) an obsessive Porsche owner and after following the build of the "blackbird" thread I became obsessed with the 930 (again).

As a poor student I followed the rise and dominance of the 930/935 in IMSA racing across the country in the late seventies, early eighties. Dick Barbour, Peter Gregg, Wolleck, Barth, etc were my hero's. Watching them run at Riverside, Laguna and Del Mar was epic., WW of Sports next best thing!

Anyway, I'm now am interested in acquiring 930 and had a few questions that I haven't been able to "search out" on RL:

1. What is the aerodynamic purpose of the slits put in on top of the 935 front fenders?
2. Was the Slant Nose a factory car offered for sale or an after market kit?
3. I know this is a can of worms: 4 or 5 speed?
4. Did RUF mod 930s or did that start with the 964?
5. Go for stock or mod'ed?

Thanks in advance and I hope eventually I can share some wisdom!!

1. Reduce lift from air in the fender wells built up at speed
2. 930S had a factory steel setup, there was a few steel kits and fiberglass kits installed after import to the US by several importers
3. 4 speed until '89 which were 5 speeds, RUF might have had them earlier though in '87. With enough power, the 4 speed is a robust and perfect box, mine feels almost too short in 1st gear and its enough to break 58mph.
4. Started with the 930, yellowbird, then the BTR etc.
5. Mod'ed - pick up someone else's work so you won't feel bad when you upgrade, install a flat fan, 934 flares and wide tires etc.

BTW Glad I could inspire you with my project - right now she's turning into a K3...check out the progress, she'll be done in 33 days:

A few quick additions...

3. RUF had their own 5 speed transmissions as of the early 1980s.
4. RUF started modifiying Porsches in the mid 1970s, I believe on a normally aspirated car, but shortly thereafter began working on the 930. RUF really became famous when their "Yellowbird" won a top speed shoot out reaching a top speed of about 211mph back in 1987.

If you guys are into RUF, check youtube, there is a fantastic 3 part interview with Alois Ruf.

Best regards,
Dino
