My understanding is SC cams for low end and 964 for upper end power. What are your goals, a quick off the line street car or high RPM track car?

If you replace your turbo with a unit that will not fall off in the upper end of the range, the SC cam does a very nice job of helping the car get out of its own way down low. My advice is to open up the intake, put headers on it, buy a hi-flow K27 (1 bar spring), a Tial wastegate/bov, and match it with the SC cam. The hi-flow wont fall on its nose over 5,000 RPM and the SC cam will give you a little more low end. Its what I had on my car prior to the EFI conversion and it was a nice mix. I had my fuel head modified, but that may not have been much help in the end. It was more helpful on other cars for some reason.

Default rebuild

I am rebuilding my 1980 930 engine and was interested in the SC cam upgrade. It is is a general swap out replacement or do I need to be concerned about modifying anything else so get more low end bump?

I have a k27-7200 already with a GHL muffler. I will switch to headers with the rebuild.

Any advice would be great.

SC cam is a direct swap-out. No need to get concerned on piston-to-valve clearance since these cams are so mild and the compression on the 930 3.3L engine is so low.

I have this exact setup in my 1979 930 (stock pistons/cylinders, Kokeln Intercooler, K27-7200 turbocharger and SC cams and am happy with the pulling power once on the turbo. I just have to pedal hard to get up to around 2500 RPM's for the excitement to kick in. Up to 2500 RPM, the engine does not have a lot of oomph.

So what is the exact advantage of the SC cam compared to the stock 930 3.3 liter cam?

What difference can i expect?

When I went through same analysis SC cams or a hybrid version by WEB were recommended for the 7200 turbo. This is a low end, quicker spooling combination.

When I instead went with a higher flow turbo (K27HF) the SC cam profile pooped out way too early. So to take advantage of the higher end a 964 cam was recommended. More radical top end cams (i.e. Group B, 934, etc.) could do even better top end, but at the detriment of streetability (low end response) and then with CIS you're going to need to improve fuel delivery.

With more radical cams, isn't there going to be a problem with the metering plate and pulses from a lopy cam? No doubt they sound great, but I would think you would need to go with EFI to get the best results and/or a better running engine.

Yeppers Rocketman, which is why noted "streetability" caveat. Although I wouldn't say "need" per se' since Group B & 934 cams come from the [vintage] CIS injection era and they're a proven marriage that does work, just not exactly the best for the street (I seem to remember having to set a rather high idle for these engines back in the day and yes the lag was a bummer, but OMG the high end... ;-). Anyways, no doubt - absolutely - EFI will offer better control and all the + advantages (and arguably its share of disadvantages when you consider cost, complexity, reliability & programming issues that one can get an ear/eye full talking with/reading from users and installers of said systems ;-).

With SC Cams and a K27-7200 you'll be building boost by 3000rpm, but peak will drop from 5,500rpm to around 5000 and you'll be all out of blow by 6000rpm...

I'm planning to get the SC Cams for my 87 930. What is the part no for this cam? Or could someone give me a link where I can get them.

Thanks!
