Is the crank sensor wire sheilded?

I would call Mr Clewett and see what he recommends for the correct airgap setting.

I would also check the sensor signal when the clutch is depressed and see what happens.

It's a three wire. Battery, ground and a bare stranded conductor that touches the aluminum sheathing internally.

The specs I gave are off his web site.

So this is a reluctor type sensor. Does that system allow you to lower the aiming threshold? Is it known what the lowest voltage the ECU needs to see to see a trigger impulse? Those sensors are not the best quality but if others are known to work Ok, then I am sure its a set up issue not an ECU issue.

I have adjusted and replaced the sensor 3 times. I have it within specs for gap.
m42racer what do you mean by set up issue. this is a pretty simple set up. As far as setting the dip switches, I have went over that with clewett and it is set up right. I have went over the set up a number of times with clewett and he is baffled too. I have had my mechanic check the system out ( he is the one who did the install when the engine was rebuilt). I have checked all his connections and everything is checking out fine. I have checked resistance of the trigger and it is perfect. Thanks John

I am going to have my mechanic check it with a scope in the next couple of days.

One other thing. I had a friend watch the ECU ( which has lights on it to tell if it is working). When it cuts out the ECU lights stay on and no fluctuation in votage at all. I had my meter hooked up to it to make sure I did not have a power issue.

JBrown,

By set up I am referring to the Trigger and wheel, not an ECU isssue. What do the lights show is working? Trigger inputs. Does that system show any Trigger errors? Does this have a cam sensor as well? The scope is going to tell you so much. If the Sensor or wheel is the issue thebscope will lose the tarce coming in. I do not know anything about thise systems, but you could ask where to connect the scope to to measure both the raw data and processed data. The sensor is bring is a typical reluctor pattern maybe 12-18V high at speed, (depends upon the sensor) and the ECU processes this into signal that it reads. If you have a dual trace scope, you can look at both at the same time. off the Wheel you should see 58 pulses and the 2 missing if its 60-2, and the ECU probably reduces this down to alot less for the micro to process. I am no expect on that system, or any other for that matter, so ask the maker for this info. **** downs like this can be found with a scope. Or at least what is working and then they can be ruled out.

First I would like to say I am an idiot. It was a sensor mounting issue. I went to readjust the gap and when I had it at .030 it hit the wheel. I was wondering how it could hit. So I took a closer look and the sensor was angled up ( just aliitle bit). So I ordered a new sensor put a small piece of sheet metal under the back of the sensor mount and that put it in perfect angle with the wheel. Readjusted the sensor to .030. Drove it all day yesterday and worked perfect. So I am keeping my fingers crossed but I am 90% sure I got it. I would like to thank all you guys for the help again. John

That's great news! Hardly qualifies you as an idiot, though. I am surprised the mount did not put the sensor perpendicular to the wheel automatically.

I agree. I would have thought the mount would keep it perpendicular to the wheel as well.

Welcome to the "Idiots Club". You're in good company and good job finding the problem. One other note - this happened to mine and I found out the trigger wheel I was using was warping at a certain RPM. So I had a more robust (thicker - 3.5mm to 6mm I think) and never had another problem. I also had the number of teeth reduced from 60-1 to 36. No issues with resolution either.

Having met John.......

I disagree

John, the weathers getting warmer, so I have been stating to hang around CIM Motorsports to jumpstart my rebuild project...see you there. My heads just went out and I will be going twin-plug with the same system, so glad yours is working. Ripping everything out of car except the DVD/NAV head unit you installed, one does need a lil' creature comfort. John, we will need to figure out new speaker solution as there is NO interior to speak of. Maybe you can fab me 2 lightweight mini-boxes to mount where the rear seats were. Track car or not, I need tunes!
