Default 930 sunroof problem

I have a 1976, 930 Turbo Carrera and when you push the button for the sunroof you can hear the motor running but the roof doesn't move. Can anybody tell me where I need to start looking? Thank you

Sounds like broken drive cables. Start with the motor in back just in front of the rear window (behind the zipper in the headliner).

It seems like a big deal to look into the sunroof guts but it's not. If the cables are broken then you should be able to push down on the rear of the roof panel while you push it backwards. Once you get it back a few inches pull the leading edge of the panel headliner of from the front. There are snaps about avery three inches. Then notice where every nut and shim is as you unbolt the four bolts holding the panel in place. Once you have done this you can go outside and lift up on the panel and see the cables and the attachments that hold them to the panel. If they are broken you will need both. One is shorter than the other so don't buy two of the same part #. On mine, it was the bracket that the cable hooked to that broke so I just welded it back and closed it up. There are several small pieces that will fall out when you remove the four bolts so keep track where they go. Also mark everything BEFORE you disconnect anything. I mean draw lines where the panel meets the bolt brackets and when you take a strange piece off mark up or down on it. It sounds difficult but it's not. Just don't be in a big hurry and remember how it goes back together. While you are in there grease everything. Good luck

I agree, check the cables first.

FYI... never open the sunroof when driving faster than 100mph. The air will grab the sunroof and jerk it back and damage the cables. I was told this years back by a mechanic and when I asked my PO of my car if he ever replaced the cables he told me this happened to him. He wondered how I would know such a thing.... I have a great mechanic I told him who told me things to look for when searching for a car.

It cost him $200 to replace them....

Cool 76
I had the same problem last week and it's not the cable, it's a tranmission ( new for $500 ish ) but I bought it used for $120. It take only 15 mins to fix it. But here the link for sunroof repair at Pelican parts. Good luck http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...oof_repair.htm
