Probably, but it was a thought. Try turning it on and find out what fan it's running, it may be a manual switch to use when on track or something. It's aftermarket whatever it is

I tried turning it on while in the car (thought it was A/C related) and didn't hear anything. This is my first grey market car and I didn't know if this was a factory thing or installed by RUF.

I'll try listening near the oil cooler tommorrow. Thanks for the suggestion. Never crossed my mind it could be for something other then the A/C, but now that I think about it, the oil cooler fan does seem viable as it does have an oil cooler installed by RUF.

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing... put the fan control for the AC there instead of the goofy air intake thermostat thing for the auto heat. That way you don't have to lean forward to turn on the AC or turn it off if you want to redline the gears as fast as posible and not kill your AC compressor doing it if it's on.
At the moment I have an extra factory fog light switch installed there, and I may just use it to turn the AC on and off because here in S. Florida the AC fan is always on high.

Having removed the little vent thing and piece of clear pvc hose connecting it to the silly little fan behind the ashtray... the "autoheat" works the same as it did before I removed it.

I've also thought of hooking a DPDT relay up to the throttle position switch, full throttle position and connecting the AC compressor to it in a way so it shuts off the AC compressor at full throttle.
The full throttle position switch on '86 on USA cars disables the lambda system pulse valve and puts it into open loop mode so the car gets a little richer air fuel ratio at full throttle under boost.
With a double or triple pole double throw relay operated by the full throttle position switch you could keep the lambda system in it's origonal operation mode along with disabling the AC compressor at full throttle if you want.

It would make sense for it to be a fan for the oil cooler. I have two toggle switches close to that position that were wired up to each fan on each fender cooler, didn't keep them on a thermostat as I don't want them to over cool the oil. They don't need to be on all the time.

On my '83 grey market 930, it runs the defrost assist fans. 1 fan per side, under the side foot kick panels under the dash. 3 speeds, 1= useless, 2= noisy with small benefit, 3=more noisy with a medium defrost benefit.
Pelican sells replacement fans @ about $125 each, if yours are melted like mine were.

So maybe it IS A/C related. I wish I had the owners manual.

No they are not A/C related. Simply windshield defrost blower assist motors. Again there are 2 in the car , 1 behind each foot well kick panel, 1 on drivers side & 1 on passenger side. They connect to the defrost/heater duct work under & below the dash.
No need to over complicate this, they are NOT linked to anything except that 3 position **** on the dash. Fully manual on/off, nothing more, nothing less.
