Default Air Filter directly off of the turbo

How many of you guys runs your air filter directly off the turbo, instead of going up into the engine bay?

Ever had issues with stuff penetrating the filter and heading into the turbo?

Do you track your car, any issues with tire rubber getting thrown into the filter, puncturing it, etc?

Thanks,

Brian

That has to be one of the dirtiest places to put your filter.

I saw a post on here a while back. Imagine auto did one like that, they fabbed a screen in the rear fenderwell to keep dirt and debris from the tires off the filter. No idea how well it worked though.

On a standard configuration, the filter would be right next to the wastegate and close to the headers which should heat up the intake air temp. I considered doing it and we tried the fenderwell location, which ended up causing sludge to get into the turbo. The rocks and things kicked up in that area may have created holes in the filter allowing dirt and grime to get through.

IMO I would avoid it. We ended up modifying the engine tin to allow for our 3" pipe to go up into the engine bay.

I have probably about 3,000 miles on this one and it still looks the same as when it was installed.
However, I don't track my car. On another thread there was a South African guy who said he had had problems with this setup when tracking the car.
Although, as you know Brian, that's where Dave Brown sticks them on the race cars he builds, he might have some input as well if you want to give him a call.

Hey Olli:

I remember looking at your engine when you came to VIR last month.
That's one reason I posted the question.

I think for now, I'm going to leave mine in the engine bay.

Brian
