Default Salvage Title Car on Ebay

Check out this just-ended auction for an 86.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1986-...em160203326291

It wound up going for $25k; I was watching pretty intently as it's a salvage-title car with lower miles. Anyone here dealt with salvage vehicles before? The seller claimed the title had been changed to rebuilt - I'm guessing this is a way to give the state a little more $$$ in exchange for allowing the car to be easier to market. My understanding of salvage-title cars is that they are a PITA to title and insure from state to state. Anyone else heard this too?

It's a shame; absolutely beautiful interior/exterior color combo - may be my new favorite.

That's a lot of $$$ for a salvage title vehicle.

I looked at a salvage title 993 once- price was great, but my insurance company would not write coverage on it.

That car had been for sale for qite some time.. since mid last year I believe. It was also advertised over on Pelican.

I've always found it interesting as to the minimal level of damage an insurance co will right-off a vehicle for.. typically a high-end vehicle. Of course the "blue-book" value at the time of damage plays a big part as well. Considering most our 930s are 20yrs old.. or older.. its just another old car to them, regardless of mileage and cult following!

The car as pictured did obviously didn't sustain substantial enough damage to be written off in my opinion. However, by the insurance company rules it was totalled. Once sold at auction, repaired, and then inspected and ok'd by the state, the title can be changed to or stamped rebuilt. Funny part about the state inspection for title purposes is that they primarily check to see if any stolen parts were used for the repair with little concern as to the quality of the repair.

It's too bad the insurance company plays this game as some of these repaired cars are perfectly good and usable vehicles. Unfortunetly they are just all lumped together with your Toyotas,Tauruses, and cargo vans as salvaged or rebuilt and not looked at as collector or exotics that someone may have spent the time and money to properly rebuild. I do agree that they should be sold or not valued to the degree of a vehicle that has never had incident, on the other hand they should still be allowed to be re-insured.

The bonnet (hood) doesn't appear to fit very well...

I think the hood fits fine, It could be moved towards the front of the car maybe another 16th of an inch to line up absolutly perfect with the fenders. but thats just a matter of four bolts. you can adjust these hoods all over the place. I'd pay 25k for it seeing as how he isn't hiding anything and the car is well documented. to me that hit shouldn't have totalled the car but with new porsche parts, thats 4k in parts right there. figure that plus all the labor to do it right, thats an easy 10k hit.

Do not buy a salvaged title car unless you are going to keep it forever. You will lose your *** when you go to sell it. Even if you have a stack of paper work stating what was repaired etc, it will always be red herring. It would be wiser to part it out than to drive it.
