Gimme your take on this 930.
Hi all,
What do you think of this turbo? Seemed it has all the right mods to make a good car.
I know about 964 & 993s, I know next to nothing about 930s. Of course, a PPI /w compression & leakdown will be needed.
But, can this car be a daily driver?

thanks,
anthony

I had one as a DD when I lived in northern CA (never got really hot outside)...I loved the car, the A/C blew luke warm, it was loud inside, had a rough ride, was a real raw car..That's what I like...but if you're looking for the smoothness/refinement of a 996 or later car or you're looking to be cool inside on a hot day (especially in Dallas) then you might have second thoughts...It was actually my fav Porsche I'd owned until my GT3..

DRG13 has described the 930 well, in a single word: RAW. You know that you're in control of a sports car, vs. just being a passenger behind the wheel. To me, it's akin to riding my Harley vs. a Gold Wing. You're in the element all the time. That's what's so appealing about the 930, along with the timeless sculptured lines and the extreme rush when on-boost. There just isn't and hasn't been anything like them since. And, they're relatively easy to modify for that extra "oomph" and not all that mysterious to work on (for those of us that enjoy picking up a wrench).
The auction price is a hair steep, but the G50 may be worth it. My '87 still sports the original 4 speed 930 tranny, and though I have yet to drive a 5 speed 930 turbo I think that there was a reason they were fitted with the 4 speed to better match the turbo as it spools up. Personally, I kinda like the long tall gears. The strong pull and rush just seems to go on and on and on.....

the car in short has a lot of very expensive and desirable mods on it Ruf intercooler, Simmons 3 piece wheels, Tial wastegate, K27, custom guages, G50 trans, static underbody condenser, the headers are B&B not GHL as stated. Someone thoughtfully put this car together I hope anyway but grat parts don't always add up to a great car. I think I would hit the buy it now if I were in the market. No affiliation etc.

Sometimes raw is good. 930s and sushi come to mind. That seems like a reasonable price to me (assuming it passes inspection). I wouldn't daily drive a 930 here in the NY metro area, but there are a bunch of folks on the board who faithfully flog their 930s to work daily. That car has some A/C mod that might possibly combat your Texas heat. Only thing that turns me off in those pictures is the gauges.

Looks like a real nice car and I like the color. Nice modifications too.
In a post up the page Mark mentioned the 4 speed 930 box used up till '89.
From what I've heard they used the 4 speed because all they had was the 5 speed 915 gearbox and case at their disposal from '75 to '88 and they needed wider stronger gears for the torque of the turbo motor when driven hard or raced.
It wasn't because a 4 speed matched the turbo better than a 5 speed.
Nowadays, they use a 6 speed...
Using the wider gearsets for strength, they couldn't fit 5 forward gearsets in the 915 case so they had to go with 4 instead.
Then the G50 gearbox came along for the normally aspirated Carrera around '86 or '87.
That may be whats in this 930.
It wasn't designed for the torque of the 930 turbo motor either so they made the stronger G50-50 for the 930 in '89.
I'd ask if the car has the G50-50.
Looks good anyway... can you get a pre purchase inspection before committing if you win the auction or do a buy it now?

Beautiful looking car....but you're in Texas? They're not the ideal thing to drive in stop and go traffic as they do heat up after a while. In the heat....the factory A/C is marginal at best, but this one says they have done the upgrade...that's a plus, I just dont' know how much the car would heat up in stop and go.....As stated, they''re "raw". The tranny is interesting.... 89 iteration with hydraulic clutch rather than the mechanical. The G50 5 speed didn't come out till 89 and if it's well done, it's a plus.
I like the looks of this car....but for a daily, I'd look to a 996 since they're dropping drastically in price. The current bid is at $27K without hitting the reserve....and you can get a 996 for that price. My good friend just sold his...granted it was a tip....for $24K.

Looks like a really nice car, but pictures can be deceiving... Price doesn't seem out of like for the car and work that has been put into it... Don't think I would want to drive it in Texas during the summer months. I really like the color, and I still think the 930 is the best Porsche ever made. Good Luck .

Ok, what is going on here, did we let a bunch of candy A$$ES in with this talk of too raw for daily driving. I wish I could drive mine daily but I have to take the company car to work.
