Default K27 turbo set up

Help me out fellas,

I have a K27 turbo that I want to slap on my stock 1980 930. I need your help. I have a stock wastegate with a 1 bar spring, stock IC with a GHL single tip 3 inch exhaust. (w/stock headers)

I track this car at DE events 1-2 times per year if I am lucky. Live in Michigan so the temp is not too hot in the summer.

To avoid fatal engine problems can I leave the 1.0 bar spring in the wastegate or should I go back to the 0.8 bar? Is the stock IC okay for this set up and limited track exposure?

One of my other concerns is the air/fuel mixture. I know how to adjust the mixture with the spring loaded allen key, but how to verify if it correct? Is checking the exhaust with a wide band O2 sensor enough? What is the recommended mixture for this set up?

Thanks for your help. I can't wait to install it and see the difference from the stock turbo.

Not sure if its the same on a 930, but on my 965, a larger turbo did not feel that good until I put on performance headers.

I would say stick with the .8 bar spring until you upgrade to a better I/C.... Also, a WB o2 sensor, is a very good idea to have installed in order to get your A/F's in check....

.8 until you get a better IC and fit an Innovate setup.

That's all good, but get the bigger Intercooler before boosting beyond .8 bar. You want that air charge to be as cool and dense as possible.
I've got a cheapo narrow band - and at best directional only - AFR gauge that tells me where I'm at. But for initial tuning, I use a Gunson Gas Tester to set the idle CO.

LM-1 or XD-16 by Innovate is the way to go.

I have the XD-16 kit but will probably get the DL-32 as well.

If you like analog guages better and don't want to watch the led lightshow like me.. especially at night, Innovate has recently added this G3 analog gauge to their product line.
They also have a similar G2 gauge where the needle starts at the eight 0-clock position with a white bezel.

According to tech support at Innovate these 2 new analog gauges have faster reaction times to AFR changes than their older DB series digital gauges.
Innovate tech support was really helpful and nice to me on the phone too.

The XD16 is their top of the line gauge though if you like digital.
I can relate to the position of a needle alot faster and easier than reading fast changing digits while hanging on and trying to stay in the gray part at full acceleration though...

I researched it and Innovate is considered by many the all around best AFR gauge set up available.

Hope they don't mind me posting this pic I saved from their website.
I'll delete it, or a moderator can if it's a problem.

I do like that gauge. does it still have the datalogging feature like the XD16?

I seriously doubt they will mind you using their pictures, especially since your promoting their product.

No, I think you need the LM-1 to datalog with any of the gauges.
The XD16 does have a button on it for that but I don't know if the gauge actually has a cpu and flash memory inside it to do that.
It does come with a software CD for a laptop or whatever, but I havn't read through what all it can do yet, and havn't installed the gauge yet either.

Least invasive installation I can think of is a regular 52mm gauge mount under the ashtray. Or make a new faceplate for the center console and put it down there.

I think the XD-16 can only log while connected to a laptop, but I may be wrong.

That analog gauge is quite nice but I personally would prefer a higher resolution. 10 to 1 AFR would be rich enough for me.
