1987 930s help
The car died last week and would not start, had to get flatbed to stealer.
Diagnosed to CDI, had a spare so they replaced it and it started fine. Drove about 5 miles and it died again. It started but I only got about 700 yards this time. Did it again after 500 yards on the 3rd try.
I did not want to break it so its back to the dealer.
Anyone recognize this behavior ?

Are you taking it to a Porsche dealer? Not many have the experience needed to work on the older cars. You may need to find an Indy Wrench who is more familiar with older Porsche and 930's in particular.
I'm guessing CDI or alternator issues. Does the CDI "whine" when the key is turned on?

No more dealer, I found a guy very close with a good rep. I did not notice any whine but the car is new to me so I don't have the ear for it yet.
I will let you know Tuesday when I pick it up

The stock CDI is plug and play, but is expensive. An MSD 6AL is like $225 or so from Jegs or Summit racing. Labor to install will add $ if you wanted to go that route, but still might be cheaper.
