Question 89 930 for sale?

Gentlemen

saw an add for a 89 with 34k miles.I am considering flying in to look at it. He wants 51k. it appears to be close to councours,if not. In the opinion of this board is that a fair market. I.E 5 speed car. Any advise would be appreciated Thanks RW

That seems high unless it is concours. If is concours and you plan to drive it, do you mind the high buy in and potential depreciation?

I think it is too high. I looked at a very nice 86 for 36k with the same mileage. The one you are looking at is nicer and has the 5 speed but 15 k more? i don't think so. 5k more and you can get a 965 from RPM with fewer miles and that is a much nicer car than the 89. I would pay 45-46 tops for that 89. JMO by the way.

A 965 is not a 930. We owners should keep it separate truly better for everybody. Was 40 too high for a 65 Shelby 350 in 88? Sure seems like a great buy in retrospect. I was offered the best Cobra 427SC in the country 5 years ago for $275 Shelby himself said he wouldn`t drive the thing from one side of Austin to the other it was that uncomfortable---I don`t have to go on about what it`s worth now.
We also underestimate the pure physical beauty of these cars(not to mention the power---especially with tweaking)--They will be worth more ,but, you can not time a market on anything.
you can pay 51 and have much more fun than anything else for the money and be assured that if you keep it a while the underlying value will rise. Good Luck!

Quite certain no 930 will ever come close to the market hype behind the shelby cars. As you correctly noted a 965 is not a 930. the OP will lose his shirt on that 89 the minute he starts driving it. Even at a conservative 8k miles a year after two years the car will have 50k miles and even more money invested it mods and upkeep. There are plenty of nice 86-88 cars in the 30s. 89's are certainly worth a premium, but not what this seller wants. 34 thousand miles are too high for the price. And I think the fact that this car has been for sale for quite a while speaks for itself.

You would be throwing money out the window to pay more than 35K for any 930 that you intend to drive. You can search these boards and get one for 25K in great shape every once in a while.

If you are trying to make some kind of investment out of this, be prepared to never drive the car and make sure it stays perfect until some day in the distant future when all our prophecies of the super rare 930 come true. In the meantime you can pick one up all day long for half that price and drive it.

930s are everywhere on EBAY. It will take a lot of those cars being crashed before the 930 becomes an investment car.

On what your intended use is for the Porsche.......weekend/garage queen or drive it a bunch......I've been looking for several years and I once owned a late year 930 purchased new......

$51,000 can turn into $60,000 or $70,000 very quickly with a 930.....I think you have to see it in person and drive it.....and have good mechanic evaluate the car; but having said that, the best PPI in the world is only good for that moment in time....if money is not an issue, buy it....if you hate to put more money out for the unexpected....think about it.......

Is it a good investment? I know for me it would be dead money filling a "want rather than a need"

Is the price high, the easy answer is yes, but that is a buyer's perspective

I saw a 89 turbo in Ontario over the weekend and he wanted $70+ for it with 65k miles. real clean, not impressed with engine compartment. A 79 in A++ condition was going for $53 with 21k miles. I saw a 87 slant nose delete with 14k miles a few months back and it sold for $47k US. The reason I hear for the higher 89 prices seem to be the 5 gear transmission form the prior 4 gears. One thing for sure, when you see a prestine 930, it's hard to walk away from it.

For what it's worth. My 964 turbo was a concours car, and still is if I returned it to stock condition (not going to happen ). Low miles, all of the repair reciepts since 1997, and a very desireable color. But, I want to drive my car like it was stolen and let's be honest, it's not the end all of Porsche's. If we are talking about special model turbos, like a factory slant nose cab, or a turbo S, or even a low mileage 3.6 turbo, then I can agree with the investment mentality. But a 930; buy it, drive it and enjoy it...

If you really want to figure out what the difference is between an '89 an earlier 930's find a similar 930 ie; miles, condition, color, accessories etc and then add about $10,000 to it for the 5 speed tranny. Since there is not much difference other than that between early '80's and the '89. I believe you can find many 930's in the high twenty's to mid thirties in similar condition. Add the $10,000 and you come up with low to mid fourties. Remember though that a trans mod on an '88 or older will not net you the same $10,000 when you sell it. The other thing that will make it more attractive to pay his price for the '89 is that you would not have to do a lot of the work your self to keep it to only $10,000 for the new 5 spd. If it checks out really good make him a lower offer with cash! It is surprising what green will do to a determined seller. Good luck and let us know what you do.

Excellence is still the best price source if you want to be on the current money. My previous point was: when a car is an icon it will ultimately appreciate---they built over 70,000 356s but look at the prices now. How about early 911s pre 73? Much of this has to do with the look of the car,and to many the 930s are beautiful things. But, mostly they are the last semi lightweight BAD BOYS---and that is worth something.

I just bought an 89 930 Cab. Red/Tan with 15,000 miles in concours condition. I paid 50,000 for it I agree the 89 5 speed adds $10,000 to the car over 86-88 plus mine is a cab. I got a very good deal. Do not forget to add shipping costs and at leaast another 2000 for minor issues.
