options to change to a 5 speed in 79 930
What are the options available to change from the stock 930 4 speed tranny to a 5 speed?
I want to increase the performance and think that the tranny is probably the best bang ofr the buck over other engine mods which most guys do.
I intend to DE the car and the extra 5th gear should make a better spread to keep me in the power band.
I would like to keep the cable clutch and don;t want to start converting to hydraulics if that is possible.
Any advice on vendors that supply the 5 speed conversions would be appreciated.

How much power do you or will you have?
It "may" be a better choice to add an 8:32 R&P to your existing tranny. G50/xx 5 spd conversions are costly, are NOT close ratio, and may not benefit your application.

I looked into this option when my transmission fell apart in my modified 78 turbo. Patrick Motorsports sells a short bell housing G50 that goes into a 930 without cutting the chassis. Cost was about $8K for the box alone, plus I am guessing at least 1-3K for clutch/labor/etc. I don't think it is worth it relative to regearing the 4 speed box, which is probably the most cost effective mod. Especially when coupled with a shorter ring. I rebuilt my box to stock and am now facing a complete engine rebuild (ouch). I am not sure that the $10K+ for a 5 speed is worth it. If you want a better spread for the track, regear the 4 speed and invest the difference in engine mods, I say, but I am sure that the hardcore track guys on the site will chime in with their experience once their New Year's hangovers wear off...
