High Mileage Turbos a bad idea?

I found a couple of high mileage 930 Turbos that seem to be priced very cheaply. I've already contacted the sellers to see if the title's are clear and what issues they might have, but I'm wondering what people on here think of a 911 Turbo with say, 100k+ miles.
How often do these engines need to be rebuilt? Are these cars generally maintenance nightmares once they get high miles?
And I guess most importantly does anything in the 15-19k range for price seem too cheap to be true?

My turbo has ~105k miles. The engine & trans have each been rebuilt one time. A properly maintained turbo will last a very long time. The older carerra engine would often go 250k before needing a rebuild. A turbo will be less than that, but 150k is certainly not unreasonable if you leave the boost stock and take care of the car. So if the PPI checks out, I would not hesitate to buy a high mileage turbo.
Now your range of $15k-$19k seems to cheap to me. I would want a complete PPI to make sure there were no hidden problems.

Engines start to be ready for a rebuild around 60K. Obviously they can go much longer, but I would expect one either way. Everything else on the 930 is as good or better than a 911 so mileage shouldn't be a big issue. Realize that since many parts are better than a 911, they are also more expensive. The brakes come to mind.
I think some 930's have problems because they are parked too much, so more miles might be better if the car wasn't abused.

Hmm good input thanks fellas. Yeah my main concern was how cheap the price was but if I can get a nice deal rebuilding the engine won't hurt as much, plus I can throw in some goodies while I'm at it. =)

David - I am not sure where you are getting the 60K mile rebuild number?
My '89 car has over 56K on it, so it has been driven and well looked after. When I bought it last Spring the Leakdown was 2-3% and 130-135psi across all cylinders.
The PPI was done at Blackforest Porsche in San Diego who do alot of Turbo cars and their rule of thumb is engine rebuild (split the case) at around 150K-200K and a top end rebuild at 100K
My 2cents.
I would prefer to buy a car that has been driven and maintained than garaged most of its life.

It seems like I seen many engines being rebuilt around 60K (including my own), but this could be on cars that see track time or have been parked for a while. I'm sure many go well over 100K.

A couple of mechanics I have used in the past told me that 930s fall into three main catagories: garage queens, weekend warriors, and daily drivers.
The weekend worriors are rebuilt at 60,000 miles.
The garage queens are rebuilt at 25,000 miles.
The daily drivers are rebuilt at 100+ thousand miles.

When you think about it, it's this daily driveability of the 930 that makes it such a special car when talking about "exotics" from this era...or any era for that matter. If cared for properly, these folkers will do the time!!!!!!!!! I never ran accross many high mileage Italian exotics <<COUGH>>(Ferarri)<<COUGH>> driven or garaged, that dollar for dollar could match this feature of Porsche's!

I think the garage time is the most destructive to these cars. Driving is the reason for ownership. My Brother In Law has a 78 with 225 on it and he drives it all over the place all the time(plus the car always sits outside--no garage--still looks decent) you drive them you got to love them.

Mine's at 237,000 km (148k miles) and is still going strong. Valve job was done at 200,000km (120k miles). Don't know about leakdown and compression but it's still making good power at stock boost (new K27-7200 last year), uses very little oil (about a litre in 5,000km), doesn't leak, oil pressure is OK - good, and it doesn't smoke (except for a little puff after sitting for a while). It's done some track duty but mostly is a daily driver.
I'd be curious to know how many rebuilds are discretionary and how many were really required - it's probably impossible to find out but any way you look at it these cars are incredibly robust compared with their peers.
I wouldn't be put off by a high mileage car, and if the price is right you can just send the engine off to Imagineauto for your dream rebuild and still be in reasonable shape overall.
