California smog law
Hi ... I was to get my 1979 930 smogged this past weekend. I set the CO to the specs listed under the decklid (on the Ca emisions sticker) .... 2.5 +/- .5 at idle 950-1050. Got the specs on what it needs to be to pass .... so at 15 mph it is like 1.30 and at 25 mph it is 1.16. So my question is how can California change the specs on what a car can run if it has already been set to a standard ? Running it that lean cant be good.

Because they really don't care if your motor goes bust. As long as the lone flower by the side of the road has a fighting chance... never mind the particulate emissions of every city bus and truck. That black soot is ok to permiate the air. It's good for your lungs too.
Seriousely, in due time they will probably regulate our cars out of existence. Track driving will probably be the only chance to run these things, oh but wait, never mind... by the time the Carrera GT lawsuit takes everyone who has ever walked by a road course to the cleaners, all the tracks will close too.
Sorry for the grim, sarcastic view. I couldn't help myself. I just need to remind myself that I can't tell jokes like Sinefeld, so that is not the route to buy a bunch of Porsches....

Get your mechanic to find a user-friendly smog shop where they can tweak it to pass, then readjust it for the street. The CA rules are only going to get more ridiculous. I know of a 930 owner who pays to have a cat exhaust bolted on every two years to pass, then goes back to his regular exhaust.

It's posted in detail on the Carrera GT forum. Bem Keaton's fatal crash at California Speedway. The passenger's wife is sueing the track, Ferrari club (sanctioning body for the track day), the flagman, Porsche, Ben's estate (like his poor widow needs this right now), and a bunch of others. I think he is also the same lawyer that sued Porsche for the "unsafeness of the 930" (and won). Do a search, you'll have a bunch of pages to read... I havn't checked into it lately, so I don't know where things stand at the moment. It just seems soooo easy to just start a lawsuit.

You didnt mention if your car is California car or a 49 state version. The California version has not been changed by the state. The state is pretty liberal for the early 930's compared to the 86 930 on. The 86 and later specs for the 930 are a lot tighter.

I will most likely be going with an extra cat ..... the car is an original California car ... all the stickers state that it meets California emission laws. There is even a sticker inside the door that says "non-catalyst". I am pretty sure there is no way it will pass without the cat. Even if the CO comes down enough (to 1.16!) Im sure NOx will go out. I am just wondering how California can impose smog laws, on a vehicle with all the original smog equipment functioning, to a point which is physically impossible.
