Default TIAL Wastegate Problems

It wasn't a big deal, but my TIAL wastegate seemed to be inconsistent by allowing the system to spike or overshoot 1 bar, and other times it seemed that the boost would not build quick enough. After confirming this by logging some data from the ECU, I decided to take the TIAL off to see if there was a problem like a split diaphram.

When I took the unit off, it looked fine. I decided to disassemble the unit and found that there was significant carbon build up on the valve stem that opens and closes the circuit. I took the valve out and cleaned it up, and re-assembled everything.

There is now a big difference in the way in the way acts and reacts. The manifold air pressure signature in the datalogs is now predictable and appears to be smooth which I can really feel.

The whole disassembly and reassembly took about 1/2 hour, so it might make sense to check yours, if you use one.

Good info. I wonder if some of this could be caused by running overly rich during the EFI tuning.

You gotta run that thing on the track more Don. 15-20 seconds of wide open boost at a time without a chanceto breath will blow all that buildup off of the valve and you'll never have to clean it.

Mine is self-cleaning.

Was it hard to take the wastegate apart and back together because of the spring? Mine has also been inconsistent. Do you guys use a EBC also? I have a Greddy Profec B-specII seems inconsistent as well.

The whole process took about 1/2 hour. I installed a .3 bar spring, so I did not have to get my wife to set the screws while I held the halves together. Also, I use the ECU to manage the boost at one bar.

I have seen pics of people using one of these to help them with the spring pressure when they take the WG apart & reinstalling it.

I went for a 0.5bar spring and will use my ebc to increase pressure.
