Default ring gear/starter?

Has anyone had problems with starters and ring gears? I just put my 83 930 back together after an engine and trans overhaul. The old starter had chewed up the ring gear so I replaced both. I bought a Bosch rebuilt starter and a factory ring gear. The first time I cranked the engine, the starter failed to fully engage and ground against the ring gear. It has hapened once more since. The factory shows no difference in starters between turbo and non turbo. Any ideas?

Mine was the same way and I also got a new ring gear but with the old (stock starter it still did it). Later I upgraded to a hi-torque starter and then you have to use washers to align it. If I remember correctly, it would miss sometimes still but what can you do? I got the hi-tq. starter because one, the pinion was really worn and two, I wanted a faster start up.

The more I dig into the problem, it seems that it may be low voltage going to the solenoid because of wear in the ignition switch. I plan to install an additional solenoid at the starter, and change the electrical part of the ignition switch. If it works, I will post it here.

That doesn't make any sense but what does is a lack of current flow to the soleniod instead possibly. If your going to go through all the trouble of installing another solenoid then you might as well upgrade to the high torque starter instead. The ignition switch is like $50 and will go bad sooner or later anyhow (it happened to me). What more can you do?
