Wouldn't that mean the bulk of any trash would get caught in the filter?

If it got to the filter then yes I suppose it would (I don't really know too much about it).

I guess that there is a pump that pumps the oil out of the engine, I guess it would get damaged or blocked (not too sure).

Supposedely the reason for the filtering on the way out was that during a race the engine would always get oil from the tank with no chance of a filter blocking/restricting the supply of oil.

Anyone want to give me the full details ? I am interested to know.
