If I am running a constant 80 without much need for pressure on the accelerator I have no need for boost--it is 0 and that is with a 4speed. Without boost this thing should get the mileage of a low compression non Turbo. However, we all know the fun is in the boost and I will happily spend the money to see all large objects in my rear view mirror become pindots immediately upon acceleration.

I don't think of us as lucky.

I just think of us as less UNlucky than you.

How much of that is taxes? I've heard that as much as 60% of the cost is taxes.

In the US, the gub-mint only adds something like $0.60 (maybe $1.00) to the cost of gas.

Fed tax is $0.18 per gallon - state is unique by state. Here in GA, it's $0.075 per gallon, plus 4% sales tax. If you live in NY, it's $0.31 per gallon.

I stand corrected...

Does this look right to you? In RI, premium gas (93 Octane (AKI)) (as I've been seeing it) normally ranges from $3.239/gal to $3.339/gal...the gas station closest to me? $3.759...

Tax is a percentage of the sale cost per gallon. Small wonder George W isn't in a hurry to investigate the overnight doubling of prices.

At $9 a gallon I'd torch a station in protest. The lower middle class would become instantly transportationless.

Welcome to world oil prices. We Canadians have been been getting hosed a lot longer.

Around here in Toronto we routinely pay C$1.20/L for ethanol enhanced 94 (that's US$3.80.Gal). To me it feels normal. Last summer in Montreal I recall paying $1.55/L (US$4.90).

But really hurts is the race gas I have to use at the track for $3.79/L ($12/Gal).

Everything's relative...

I feel most sorry for those living in California though. What a great place to own a car. You must have the worst gas in the world. Ethanol enhanced 91. How on earth do you get a Turbo to run on that?

Fortunately, my car is not a daily driver and I'm only able to put about 750 - 1000 miles per month on it. Worrying about gas prices while owning this caliber of car is kind of an oxymoron anyway.

Here is the deal: wholesale gasoline(refined product) is selling for $1.95 to $2.00 per gallon. Ethanol is around $2.25 per. The oil market is around 71 per barrel but generally dropping since it costs the Saudis about $2.00 to pull it out of the ground. Lots of speculators and lots of political crap goes on(Hugo Chavez stuff)

In the UK it is approx 70% or 80% tax. 30% to 20% is the cost of the fuel and all profit made out of it.

Yes. Gasoline is pricy. Filling up mine (OT as Im not 930 owner, but this is intresting) cost's over 100€, but I get 9l/100km.
Price here is 1.45€ a litre. Tax? its something like 90% of price.

So going with 75% (average) of the fuel price being tax, then US$9/gal is approximately $2.70/gal for the furl and $6.30/gal for tax?

HOLY CRAP!

But that DOES mean that, factoring out taxes, US citizens do pay close to what the rest of the world pays for gas. We just get taxed less for it.

Oh- re: 94 octane...it got banned in, I think, all of the Northeast USA (I think because they enhance it with MTBE)! When they DID sell it a year ago, it went for $3.49/gal, I think, which would probably mean it would be close to $3.79/gal now...except at this one Sunoco station near my NJ house where their price for 94 Octane was at least $0.40/gal more than the other Sunoco station in town. They were at $3.999/gal a year ago!

In NJ, after 94 octane was banned, they sold 93 as "Ultra," 91 Octane as premium, 89 as mid-grade, and 87 as regular when, previously, there was no 91 octane gas. Funny thing is that the prices stayed the same based on the names. That is, they INCREASED the price of 93 octane and placed the 91 octane at the price of super (when it was 93 octane)!

Oh well...

Wholesale refined gas is around $1.95 per gallon--tax etc. go on top of that. Also the new additive and the only legal one is ethanol which is around $2.25 to $2.50 per gallon wholesale.
