Im currently an ower of a 87 toyota supra turbo. My car has around 450rwhp, so im pretty familar with the maintence, etc. As the title says, im looking for an 80's porsche 911 turbo manual . Can anybody help me on distinguishing the differences or which year in the 80's made the best turbo. Im looking for the price not to exceed 30k, Im pretty sure I could get one with great miles for that price. I am also a fan of the 930 turbo slantnose, but it must be a hardtop
Im just really looking for the year with few problems and great potential. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks guys

77!.. jk :P
I'd go with the 78 or 79, though they are basically unchanged from 78 to 89 - they changed the rotors to a less expensive, non-floating type sometime after 79(I think) and they got 16x9 wheels in the rear for 86. The 89 got a 5spd tranny. The 80-85 are grey market so they need the proper federalization paperwork.
Any year 930 has great performance and massive potential.
Rocket, why do you pick the 87? You probably know something I don't - wouldn't be the first time...

Doesn't the 78-79 have better flow potential? I don't think you'll want to go 86-87 as your choice for $30k target. I might just use quality vs. $$$ and leave the year where it falls. They are all getting old and for a turbo air cooled engine......maintenance is the key. You didn't say if your getting rid of the Supra. Is this going to be the next hp toy or are you wanting a sunny day fun ride. I would put more value in newer if "sunny day" car like maybe a lucky 3.3 car.
76-77 are non intercooled and would probably seem mild and slow coming from where you are.
Also, do you want to pay for "stock" or pay for "mod's"? You don't want a garage queen that has sit around and are charging big $$ for low mileage. I'd rather pay for a car that is driven and maintained.
For any 911/930 most of the $$ hangs out the back end. Brakes, trannys, and even body panels are all within reason. Interior pieces are not much different than any quality car (a new leather seat for my truck runs over $2500 so I'm not sure what that says). Mod's are the $$ in a hole option. Best way is to pay for them, if done correct, is penny's on the dollar at purchase rather than list later, if your interested in such. Suspension upgrades may not add much cost, but will save you much hassle later if you like the choices.

I would also say the 78-79 years are best for upgrading to higher hp and torque. The fuel distributor on those cars was same as the Euro counterpart. Although I never made the comparison, I would expect these years to be lighter weight.
Getting to 400 rwhp is going to cost you a lot more than a Supra. I suggest you try to find one that has the basic work already done: SS exhaust system, larger intercooler, 7200 HF turbo, cams
With a 1 bar spring, that will get you close to 400 rwhp. Much beyond that, you need to change over to a different fueling and engine management system. Of course, a 5 speed tranny with close ratio gears would also be nice.

'78 and '79 fueling and engine management is just fine to 450hp. I know, I did it and tested it.

If your going to leave the car stock, go for the 89 turbo with bigger a/c vents, g50 g/box etc etc. If your going to modify it, than go for the earlier ones with the euro fuel distributor. Off course have the car inspected first inside out.

I will ***** the 88 model year 930. I believe the last 4spd slushbox production Porsche ever built.

I guess I'll weigh in too...
If you can find an '89, the fith gear is worth it. I have a 4 speed and it is really my only complaint.
The updated interior from '86 up is a significant upgrade IMHO. For that reason I would stay with the '86 and up...
As far as motor differences - face it - if you're here, you're going to mod it anyway....

77 930...The short stroke motors rev up faster. and once you go to 3.2 ltr p's/c's you can run with any of the 3.3 and 3.4 ltr cars. And as sson as I can afford EFI I'll be able to pass em too.
