Default 930 CDI & Wastegate Conversion

Hi Guys,
This is my first posting here. Have the following questions which
I'm in need of advice.

1. If the original CDI is demaged, can it be replace by an MSD CDI unit.

2. Is the wastegate from a 951 a drop in replacement. Yes, I know the
vacuum chamber is different but was wondering if the dimension are
the same on the wastegate valve side.

Thanks in advance

I think with the MSD you need a high vibration blaster ignition coil.

951 wastegates are junk compared to your stock 930 wastegate.
If you want to run a different wastegate upgrade to the tial 40mm wastegate
its a direct bolt on.

welcome to the forum

You'd want to go for the tial 46mm wastegate for the 930. I've had mine for 3-4 years already and no issues.

Here's how I did mine a few years ago with some help from Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems:

I just installed one on my '87 a month or so ago. My biggest challenge was to find a place to mount it. There's not much room in the engine compartment and it wouldn't fit where the old CD went. I ended up placing it in the passenger compartment on the drivers seat (I have an aluminum Butler Built seat). This way it was protected from the elements and was accessible. I ran the wiress through the tunnel access cover and into the engine compartment. I used the purple and black wire at the tach, as it was a spade connector vs. the connector in back which was round. I also used a grommet which had a larger opening to fit all the wires through in place of the speedo wire grommet in the tunnel sheet metal. In addition, you'll need to add some wire to some of the MSD wires to reach what you need. Somebody else, may have a better location, so keep your eyes open.

Here's a long email question and answer that Steve Wiener kind enough to send me in regards to the install. Any other questions, just email me privately.

QUESTION: I'm installing an MSD 6AL in my '87 930 and have a question about the wiring. Here goes:

1- The large red wire goes to the battery or Pos lug on the starter solenoid.
DONE
2- The large black wire goes to ground. DONE
3- The small orange wire goes to the Pos side of the coil. DONE
4- The small black wire goes to the Neg side of the coil. DONE
5- The small red wire goes to switched Pos. DONE
5- The white wire is not used. DONE. (I used this to trigger a MSD shift light after the initial install in addition to the tach output adapter)
6- The violet wire?
7- The green wire?

Since the Turbo uses a magnetic pick up type distributor and the MSD unit has
a violet and green wire coming out of it which connects to the distributor,
my question is which wire does the MSD violet wire connect to and which wire
does the MSD green wire connect to coming out of the distributor? Does the
MSD violet connect to the coaxial center wire or to the sheathing wire? Or
the does the MSD green connect to the coaxial center wire or sheathing wire?
Or does it even matter which one I connect to?

ANSWER: You are right in that the violet & green wires conduct the trigger voltage to the MSD. This is phase sensitive and must be connected correctly otherwise the car will not start or run poorly. Connect the center conductor to the green wire and the shield to the violet wire.

I didn't want to cut any of my harness up, so I unplugged the wiring harness off the CD and connected my wires there (the ones from the distributor). *I read a post where someone found a connector to fit the original distributor connection.*

QUESTION: In addition, to make the tach work correctly, the tach adapter is used and:
1- The red wire is to switched Pos. DONE
2- The black wire is to ground. DONE
3- The white wire goes to the tach output on the MSD unit itself. DONE
4- The violet wire is run to the tach input (the purple and black wire by
the CD unit). DONE

Fine,.............

Sorry for the long question and I appreciate any help you can give me to make
sure I make the last few connections correctly and not fry anything.

Happy to help anytime. This is what we do,.....

BTW. I emailed MSD the same question and they were clueless. Some tech support.

ROFL, and you are surprised at that???????

If its not some Detroit iron, those guys know nothing.

Have fun,

Will that MSD wiring configuration work on a 77 930 turbo also? Would it be better to run the MSD BTM (boost timing master) ignition, this way ignition timing could be adjusted (retarded) based on boost? Also, couldn't i use the pos.,and neg. off the coil to input the red and white (red+, white-,) wires on the msd, and then output orange+ black- to the msd blaster coil? Also would the tach output on the MSD box be used to input the tach adaptor? This is the way i wired my 944 turbo, and have wired it on most of the EFI cars i've done in the past. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,

I recently insatlled an MSD 6AL box for my 87 930. Although I have installed the uniot, I have yet to attempt starting the car because I of course want to make certain that I have dotted all my I's and crossed all T's. Afterer having read some of the responses on this particular discussion, I would like to know if anyone can please explain to me the wiring hook up for this unit. I did contact tech's at MSD who knew nothing about installing this on my car. Following the instructions, I now see that I did not by pass my stock CDI box. Can the MSD be used in place of the CDI unit and if so, how can I wire it up as such? If someone could by chance explain to me what wires of the MSD are connected to. I believe that my car has a CDI box that is going bad as the car will simply stop running. When attempting to restart the car, it backfires (LOUDLY), leaving me to believe that the problem stems from a faulty ignition system. I am hoping that the installation of the MSD will fix this, besides, it is past time for an upgrade but of course I would need to by pass the CDI box. Any advice on the matter would much appreciated.
