I also have an '87 with the brake light in the window. My understanding is that Porsche has/had a habit of many times changing things mid-year between model changes. So I think it is a matter of the build date within the year.

If you don't want to cut into your factory wiring to install an H4 plug there are a few vendors that sell a short piece of wiring that has an H5 male end and an H4 female end. These get installed in series. Of course, you could always make one of these up yourself. And while you're at it, you should also consider installing relays, especially if you are using higher wattage bulbs.

So the only thing that you have to change out is the plug? If thats the case I dont mind splicing the new plugs into my harness. When I do this Im definately gonna put relays in too.

Switching to a 5 speed transmission is one of the best modifications you can do. It is not however inexpensive, plan on approximately $10K for a complete swap including the transmission, shift mechanism, pedal assembly and clutch master cylinder. The G50/50 transmission is the most frequently used transmission.
There is always plenty of debate about the merits of the 4 speed vs. the 5 speed. The facts are that the 4 speed is a great transmission, plenty strong, and when the ratios are changed the car really comes alive. However, the G50/50 is stronger yet, and having an additional gear split is very useful for any 930 that is driven on the track.
The 4 speed works fine for most people, and from a cost effectiveness perspective, simply changing the 2nd thru 4th ratios nets a significant improvement in flexibility.
