Default What should an Engine Reseal cost?

Just got a quote to "re-seal" the engine due to several oil leaks.. I thought they all leaked. The dealership wants $20,203.95. That seems crazy to me but I don't know what is involved, so please chime in.

Thanks,
Huck

I'm getting an estimate soon to do this so will be interested to hear what others experience is. I have engine out time records from prior ownership with my car, and the engine removal (out and in) is about 8 hours shop time total. Then add all the seals, gaskets, etc. time. I am figuring about 24 hours of shop labor plus materials.

This largely depends on where the leak actually occurs. The breather dome or the oil temperature sensor are often leaky and the oil runs down the housing and is wet at the bottom. Then the range extends from dismantling the intercooler and air filter to taking out the engine and dismantling the housing. Even with the chain cases, there is a big difference whether only the cover or additional the seals of the camshaft are leaking.

The condition of the clutch also plays a role in the assessment.

In order to give an correct estimate of the effort it is necessary to clean everything from oil and then determine what the real cause of the leaking is.

If everything necessary should be redone due to its age and in order to have peace of mind for a long time, 35k probably won't be enough.

you should differ reseal and overhault. if it is only a reseal without any other work you can be done at about 10 to 12. if you start to change out worn things, rework heads, all bearings, turbo, oilpump, … you will end up at 35 plus as fritz wrote above. if there is some power add ons the sky is the limit…
