Best Engine Upgrades
I have a stock 1986 930 with 57k, what you be the best engine upgrades pls?
I have head about changing: headers, exhaust, air filter, turbo, cams, top end rebuild, etc
I would like the car to have more modern day performance but also not to lose drivability.

I have a 1988 930S. I put a Fabspeed exhaust on it when I first bought the car 6 years ago. Few months ago, I installed headers and 964 cams. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Yes both Fabspeed. I was having my engine rebuilt and that's why I spent an extra $1100 for the cams which is supposed to give a mid range punch but if you're not opening the engine up then stay away from changing the cams and maybe shoot for a K27 turbo and larger intercooler.

A more modern turbo and cams really help these cars. Stock, the 930's are very bulky and sluggish off boost. I have SC330 cams (basically a hybrid between SC and 964 cams) in my 930, as well as a K27-7200 turbo, exhaust, ported heads and Kokeln IC. It's way more driveable off boost and turbo lag is also improved over stock. The car still has huge turbo lag compared to my 997TT but that's part of the charm!

I have a K27 7200, TurboKraft long neck intercooler, Rarlyl8 exhaust and WEVO short shifter. Pleased with all mods thus far. Thinking to put in a Elephant Racing package in the Spring.
I know I listed more than engine but something to think about. The K27 brings boost earlier and sort of smoothed it out. Still punches though.

Assuming no change to the cam and just sticking to bolt-on replacement exhaust/headers, intercooler and turbo, should the CIS be tuned to account for the changes? My new 1988 930 has no mods other than a Classic Retrofit CIS+ but I was thinking about some light mods to improve low-end torque without sacrificing drivability or having to open up the engine. I will also be adding a WEVO short shift kit.

Following up on this thread, I’m now looking at which components to buy and I’m wondering what exhaust options there are that include a catalytic converter. I’m from NH and there is an annual inspection requirement which includes verifying that your exhaust has a cat, and I don’t want to have to swap parts every year for the inspection or have to rely on finding a friendly inspector to overlook the missing part. Muffler aside, based on very helpful information from the forums and Chris at TurboKraft, I’m looking at Billy Boat headers with heat exchangers, a TurboKraft longneck intercooler and a Garrett GT35R turbo. If/when I need to open up the engine I will also add Sport SC cams.

If you are not up to doing the tuning, headers, free-flowing muffler and a lightweight flywheel will really bump output and response.
IMO, the air filters available to the 930 don't improve anything and are a waste of money so stick with a stock one.

Any suggestions on changing the fuel injection to accommodate the bigger turbo, cams, intercooler and exhaust?
