Default 911 newbie...thoughts on a car?

Gruppe -

First, thanks for the great forum. I have learned a lot in a few days lurking.

Second, if this post is out of line or should be elsewhere, please let me know and I'll take care of it

Third, any thoughts on this car:

My daily driver is a 1987 M6 which I am selling. Not a plug (although if you're interested, drop me a line ) but rather an explanation: I want a smaller car again. I went from driving 2002s and 1600s for years to this M6. It's extremely fast, has just about all the suspension tweaks you could ask for, but I miss tossability.

Anyway, this car looks good, but I am concerned about 2nd gear. This is also a problem, probably for similar reasons, in old 4 speed BMW transmissions. However, for those cars it can be managed for years with a little double clutching and some MTL. But I'm not sure about 911s - and since I drive in heavy traffic, it is a concern to me.

Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts.

Default What's your budget

I am still relatively new here myself, but from what I have learned If you can budget the high teens/low 20's you should get an 87-89. 87 was the first year of the G50 transmission which, in most people's opinions (not all), was much better than the 915 transmission it replaced.

In regards to that specific car, if it has been taken car of, the mileage should not be a problem. I would get a thorough PPI done on the car and then go drive it. Just my two cents.

I think you're right. I am looking for a nice late SC or an '87. I figure that's consistent with my budget (i.e. what I'll get for my M6)...but this one I think is owned by someone who took care of it. Thanks for your reply.

Regardless of what the owner tells you, or that you "think is owned by someone who took car of it," you need to get a PPI done by an independent P-car specialist. Do not use the mechanic that the owner is using...and if possible, inspect the car yourself as well. If you know anyone that is a P-car owner now, it is a great help to have them accompany you when you inspect the car as they tend to notice things that you miss in your excitment...

Good luck!

Ditto,
What jet911 says is law.....The PPI will pay for itself in negotiation over the certain issues a 15+ year old car will have. Also , try to find a list member to looksee if you can't get there.

1st gear synchro is gone from his description, not 2nd. This is is common, yet not necessary on 915 transmissions, so take some money off for that.

I don't understand your comment about wanting a late SC or '87. SCs are from '78-'83. The '84-'86 Carreras have the same transmission as the SCs. BTW - have you read the Rennlist SC FAQ yet?

I don't believe the guy is a car enthusiast. Why "upgrade" (whether drilled rotors are an up or downgrade is a separate discussion) your brakes and then put on all season tires optimized for low noise - so you can lock them up better? I'm just saying that his idea of "well taken care of" might be different than yours. This may also indicate that he's "babied" the car, which 911s don't really appreciate - see the "broken headstud after 1 day of ownership" thread.

Seems ok otherwise. If you're really interested - talk to the guy to get an idea what he's all about.

Good luck,
Stef
