Talking Got my 911!

I finnally have my 911!

It's a 1987 Carrera Targa with only 17K original miles! It was a one owner car, with all the service records, books, window sticker, etc. The paint is all original and perfect. I can count the number of rock chips on it with one hand. Ok, so the color was not my first choice (not even my second or third). It's Nougat brown metallic. Interesting color, I've never seen it on any other 911. It's also nicely optioned; full leather, LSD, automatic heat, central locking, factory alarm and cruise control. A PPI only revealed two dead heater blowers, low R12 refrigerant and old, but not worn out tires. The owner replaced all of these at his expense.

The car runs terrific, no sqeaks, no windnoise, no leaks, everything works. Gripes; the original Blaupunkt radio and speakers suck!

I probably paid too much for it, but it's almost the new car that I couldn't afford back in 87'.

Over the winter, I plan on installing turbo tie rod ends, a Steve Wong Chip, European pre-muffler and a new sound system.

The oil and filter were just changed. Should I stick with Dino oil or go synthetic? I plan on putting only 2 to 3K a year on it. The ride height seems a bit high. Were the US versions slightly higher than the ROW ones in 87'?

Best regards,

John

Welcome to Rennlist, and congrats on your new 'baby'! Regarding your choice of oil, if you switch to synthetic, and it doesn't leak now, then it might! Don't ask me how I know...but mine didn't, and now does...even after switching back to dino (on an '88 w/ less than 50K). I'd stick w/ dino and change it regularly (regardless of mileage - at minimum every year, but ideally, every 6 months or 3k miles whichever comes first). You could also lower it to euro ride heght (measured at the top of the wheel well arch - 25" in the rear & 25 1/2" in front)...you'll need to realign it afterwards. Enjoy!!!

ps: Add a sport muffler (along with the pre-muffler), and you will love the sound of the flat-6 so much you won't miss not playing the stereo!

Guys, thanks for the replies!

Can you or anyone, recommend a good shop in or near the southwest corner of Connecticut, for the lowering and alignment work?

Thanks

John

A great looking car!!

Your Quote "I probably paid too much for it, but it's almost the new car that I couldn't afford back in 87'. "

It is better to spend a little more and get what you really like/want than spend your time regretting not getting what you really wanted. Life is to short!!!
Enjoy your new car

words to live by.
I overpaid for my car by a country mile.
but only realize this as I gain more knowledge.

I personally dig the brown metallic rootbeer like Carerra's!
and even tho my car was equipped with an upgraded stereo I rarely even turn it on as I prefer to hear the flat six sing

was that the one at AIC? I really like that color - 17K mileage - wow - I thought mine was low (also an 87) because it just turned 49,000 miles. Steve W chip was probably the best upgrade I did to my car. That and the steering wheel change. Oh and the change to 8's and 9's polished fuchs - oh and the dual out dansk and pre muff sure do sound good. See, don't go down that path - it gets expensive!!

BTW - 1987 is the best year.

Jeremy,

Yes, it was the one at AIC.

Don't worry, the changes I have in mind are just for the immediate future. I'm sure plenty more will follow!

Congratulations - sounds like a fantastic find. I probably like originality more than most on these boards, so with that as a preface:

Your car is special at least partly because it is (at least this is my impression) a totally stock, unmolested, super low-mile example -- yours may not be a prime candidate for mods. My '81 SC still has its original Blaupunkt -- it doesn't sound particularly good, but it's cool (to me) that it's the original unit. Besides, I prefer listening to the engine.

Of course, it's your car, and you should do what makes you happy. Enjoy it -- it looks gorgeous.

Todd,

I only intend to make changes which are reversible. I'll certainly keep the removed cat and chip and the lowering will only be to European spec's.

I'll also keep the radio, maybe not in the car, but on a shelf. I haven't quite warmed up to it yet, since it's just a late 80's Blaupunkt.

I just rebuilt an early 70's Becker Mexico for my 450SL, not because it sounds good, but looks cool. A gooseneck Berlin would look great in the Carrera but I think it would be too early for an 87'. Speakers must go, however (may not even keep them on the shelf)!

Default New Targa

Beautiful car! Re the oil, I'd suggest you stay with non-synthetic.

rzepko,

Sounds like the car has found a good home (I hope you don't make new holes for speakers, though ).

BTW, I bought my '81 in '94 with 39,000 miles. I put Mobil 1 in it immediately, and it caused no leaks (now has 68K).
