That's a nice car John.

Infact all the cars in the above pics look great. A credit to you all.

I hope you are enjoying your new toy. I have just bought a 1989 Targa in black and take delivery tomorrow. I guess thaty means that I won't get any work done in the office tomorrow!

Default Great Looking Car

1. I love the colour
2. Keep the original stereo (my first modification was a new stereo - I am getting the original one fixed and put back)
3. I would only go with the Steve Wong Chip to preserve originality (my second and last modification) and perhaps turbo tie rods.

Mark SP,

An 89' 3.2, that's pretty rare compared to the number of 87's made.

Good luck with your new toy! Be sure to post some pic's.

It is a very late chassis number. Also fitted with 8 and 9 inch Fuch alloys as standard, which I am led to believe is rare in itself?

The seller has supplied me with a new footwell blower assembly, because the existing one makes a noise. So this will keep me busy over the weekend. Now where does it fit?............ I can see the search function on this site being hit hard anytime now

I don't think the 89's ever came with 8's and 9's - maybe 7's and 8's - the Turbos came with 7's and 9's. The only 8's that will fit up front (unless it's a turbo look) are the ones from a pre 1986 944 Turbo and carry a 951 part number.

Default windows sticker

Here's a copy of the window sticker. Note that it has never been affixed to the side window. I've been told that these are applied at the port of entry. If the car was picked up instead of delivered the sticker was sometimes not applied.

Do you think I'll score a few extra points in the Preservation Class if I attach it to the side window? ;-)

John:

What a sweet car. I love the color too. I looked that thing over quite a bit on the AIC site the past few weeks...

I'd give you a few extra points if I judged your car at a concours and you had that unmolested window sticker sitting on your front seat!!

I'm glad to hear you are keeping that stock stereo (at least on a shelf) and not drilling the door panels full of holes for new speakers. There are so few stock cars left... It's nice to see them intact yet.

Good luck with your new toy.

I think the '89s came with 6" fronts and 8" rears.

I guess I was wrong re the wheel sizes on mine. Now that I have it at home and can look at them in the flesh.
I cannot see any size or part numbers on the wheels though. The rears are massively dished compared to the fronts. Tyre sizes are:
205/55/16 and 225/50/16. I suspect that this means 6 and 8's?
The thing that confuses me (being new and all) is that the quattro runs on 8Jx15 rims with 215/50/15 being the standard size. I therefore assumed that 225 would be fitted to a wheel that is wider than 8J?

Hi Mark,
Your rear wheels are probably 8's as the 89 year was the first to put them in the back with 6's up front. An easy way to spot a nine (as the dish looks the same as an eight) is the lug's are recessed into the wheel. A nine does come out about 3/8" of an inch towards the fender lip more than the eight does.

You could run a 245/45 tire on the rear with eights. The second number in the size is the height of the tire and is it's percentage of the tires width.
As in a 245/45 tire is .45 percent as wide as the tires face and should be about the same height as the 225/50. And keeps the wheel's profile about the same.

If you have 6's in front they don't have any dish at all, Just the lip and almost a 90% angle up to the paddles.
I know most people trade their 6's for 7's but I like the look of a six with a polished lip. Looks very clean to me.

Enjoy you new car's

205/55/16 and 225/50/16 are the stock sizes for 6" and 7". From the pictures I would say they are 6 & 7's, but you can look on the backside of the rim for the stamped wheel size.

Beautiful car!

John looks like you have 6's and 7's on your car - definitely 6's up front.

Mine are 8's and 9's -

The '89s with the 8" rear wheels had 225/50-16 tires as standard -- same as the earlier cars with 7" rears.
