Default 964c2 or first gen NSX?

I have always been a 3.2 guy. I can't really remember what the 964 feels like to drive but I am thinking of a second horse for the stable. I love the 911 and am seriously thinking of getting a 964 (Thinking 93+ c2 coupe) as a more modern comfy driver with AC that I don't have to care about the running the miles up on. I have always wanted an NSX though.....

So what would you do? If you already had a 3.2 would you go for a 964 or a first gen NSX?

(I don't take the cars to a mechanic so only figuring part prices for maintenance)

NSX is too dated for me. good car, but dated.

964 is classic.

One is a mid engine, TI connecting rods, variable valve timing 8k redline, aluminum space frame and has the reliability of on a Honda Accord- never been crazy about the NSX looks but I would not call the design dated compared to an totally anachronistic 964. I love 964's - owned 5 of them of the years but the NSX is light years ahead in terms of design.

yup. Looks are dated. Other then that the NSX is fantastic.

Rather a 964 however. Even with the high prices and leaky engines

I have (and love) a 964. If you already have a 3.2 get the nsx. It's a very different experience.

I think you need to drive both. The 964 feels worlds different than a 3.2. I like the nsx but I wouldn't own one. Just not crazy about the aesthetics.

Classic cars are all about personal style and character. You have to drive something that appeals to you, not what appeals to me. The NSX is a nice and unique car, I personally wouldn't buy one, that's why I own a 964 and I'm in the Porsche forum. Ask this same question in the Acura forum, and I will bet you will get a different a answer. The only answer is to buy the car YOU like.

the 964 can be transformed to look like an early 911; the NSX cannot

the 993 doesn't need to

yes, you must drive each and drive them extensively

I've owned and own plenty of Porsches. I've owned one 1992 NSX. The NSX is an amazing car. It is tight and incredibly responsive. It has great power and wonderful engine sounds. It is smooth and quiet until top of the power band. It does not require much effort or allowances to enjoy.
I wish I still had mine. Unfortunately someone keyed it the length of the car, and it never was quite the same.
You should drive one and decide. It probably depends on your personality and preferences.
Good luck,
Dave

If you are to have a 3.2 and a 964 in the garage, are you going to end up gravitating towards one and leaving the other undriven?

I'd add the NSX, personally. Get some variety in the garage and perhaps you'll find both cars reward you in different ways. Or maybe after a few years you tire of the NSX and sell it and move on to something else, but at least you will have had the experience of owning one.

Agreed. After handling a couple issues, mine has been very reliable and easy to live with on a day to day basis. The biggest issue is that some parts are hard to find. Like Dave said, it's a personal decision and I'd drive both cars to see which one speaks to you more. NSX prices have leveled a bit, but are still rising slowly. You shouldn't loose money if you buy a well sorted example at a reasonable price. If funds (and spouse) permitted, I'd have a 911 *and* a NSX.

NSX is nice but there's really no other car that can provide you the experience of an aircooled 911. Wit that said I have thought about making the switch more than once. I think what gets me is how fast they've increased in value, same as the 911. I can't justify spending the money for something that was half that a few years ago.
