Restoration Shop Recommendations in SF Bay Area
I'm looking to fully restore a G50 Carrera and would appreciate recommendations to shops in the SF Bay Area.

Is Canepa in Scott's Valley too far?
He restored his 934. He also had 5 or 6 959 in the showroom and in the shop.

Canepa is a top drawer, best of the best shop, no doubt. But I can't being to imagine what it would run. They have go to be $150 an hour (maybe more?) If your car is restored there it will leave looking better than it ever did from the factory.

Check with Bob @ RMG in Sunnyvale. He may have some suggestions as he is really good on air cooled variety. His shop does mostly maintenance/repairs and drive train rebuilds.

What does fully restore mean? What does the car need? Are you looking for a full nut bolt?
Or ?
I can't imagine doing a full boat restore on a g50 unless there is something very rare about it. You'd be better off just buying a very very low mile original car $ wise.

I wouldn't restore a car in the Bay Area. Canepa won't be the only one with that kind of rate. If you are gonna put $30-40k into restoring a car, a $1000 shipping it each way is nothing to ship it to someone who is still good but in a much less expensive market.

There's plenty of shops in the Bay Area that's not Canepa. Im pretty sure you are looking for a good job but not concourse finish. If that's the case, there's tons locally. Tons of great mechanics and you can sub it out and get the paint done.
I know of a great painter in Oakland that use to work for a early Porsche dealer and he runs a 2 man shop. Probably can get a bare metal paint job, new trim for $10K and not have to wait 6 months for it to finish. Bring the engine to another shop and you are half way there.
Or bring it to PBR. Pete can do both the engine and the body.

I wasn't saying Canepa would be that price. I was saying your average proper resto will run that. Canepa is one of my few clients who never ever ask if that's my "best" price. They just pay whatever I say.

You may want to ping Patrick at Whitman's in San Rafael for a reality check.
There are a couple of shops up north & south of the CA/OR boarder that get high marks if you want to pursue that strategy...

I have a customer in the ski boat industry who texted me the go ahead on a very nice order today that has been weeks in the making and has a dozen line items. His only question was why the die boards were $1,000/set. My answer was because one of my suppliers wanted $4,500 and the other wanted $3,500. Now he is worried that I cheaped out.
