Default could be it be simultaneous fuel pump/ignition switch AND wiring probs?

tried starting my '79 SC this morning, and concluded battery is too weak...and after charging it later, it was still not starting, and realized I was not hearing the fuel pump come on

- Jumping 30 and 86 of fuel pump relay does nothing
- Jumping fuel pump (+) to Battery (+) turns pump on
- Running starter while fuel pump is running (jumpered to battery) does NOt start the engine !!!
- I have 12v at pin 30

-AND

- Jumping pin 86 to fuel pump (+) turns on the pump !!! is this right ???

Is it possible I'm not getting spark because ignition switch is faulty (which may be the reason fuel pump isn't running in the first place?)

...and why no start when both starter and fuel pump are engaged? could all fail simultaneously?

pls help...and thanks a bunch

Tarek
