Default Seat Belt Planet... Are Their Belts Any Good?

Has anyone used these seat belts for the rear seats? I am looking to replace the retracting belts with something that will actually keep my kids tightly belted in in the back of my '83 Targa...

If I had kids in the back, I'd consider going a bit further and adding 3-point belts.

I have the system from Professionally Engineered Parts: http://www.peparts.com/seat-belts/po...ear-belts.html

You will have to take out the rear parcel shelf and drill holes to install. You'll also have to cut slots in the rear shelf for the shoulder belts to pass through. The kit includes trim pieces and looks stock when completed.

Mark-
Thanks for the link! How much of a headache was it drilling the hole? Any insight into your personal experience installing them is greatly appreciated! Did you have to modify the rear shelf beyond cutting the pass-through hole?

Good questions, I'm trying to remember. Ironically, I bought the set when my kids were little, but they never rode in the car! They are in their 20's now.

You bring up a good point about drilling the holes for the retractors on the parcel shelf - I had the engine out, so I had plenty of room to drill up from underneath. I'm not sure you can get a drill in there with the engine in place. Otherwise I would have needed a right-angle drill because the Targa window would have been in the way. I totally forgot about that. But I think it is still worth it. Just rent the drill.

The other thing that wasn't obvious (at least to me at the time) is that there is room under the parcel shelf for the retractors. I was originally thinking they would have to rest on top, and I mistakenly drilled a hole through the vinyl and cardboard.

So no, there should be no reason to modify the parcel shelf beyond the slots for the pass-through of the belts.

any new holes need to be carefully reinforced; existing mounts need to be inspected

30 year old belt webbing and mechanisms is not something you want to trust your kids to

The PEP kit comes with Grade 8 hardware, and large washers that go under the nuts where the retractors mount to the parcel shelf. They also come with a Professional Engineer seal, so a bit more confidence that an engineer actually did some design work when it comes to the strength of the installation.

I bought SB Planet product for my Weissach but only the fronts. My mechanic installed them for me and I am pleased with the product in looks and function- have them in my car for about 9 months.
Hope that helps.
Mine are the more traditional Black ones as close to stock as they had.

The long hoods already have the nuts in place.
