Default Intake manifold meltdown! (also posted on Pel-parts)

Hi all,

(Anyone ever had the same experience?)

On my 1970 2.2 I encountered the following..

Because of bad cold starting, I removed the air filter box.

YIKES! on the right intake manifold, the 3 plastic cups which are on top of the manifold itself, were completely shrivelled and black, like they had been on fire.

90% had molten down into the manifold, and could be taken out bij removing the leftovers from the manifold.

The plastic had drooped down, but the cups were in one piece.

Yes, some plastic has gone into the engine and had fouled up the throttle valves.

I also noticed that the right side cold start fuel jet had broken of in the airfilter cover, so larger amounts of fuel have been pumped into the manifold.

Could this have caused the fire?

I don't intend to open up the engine. It runs great and doesnt make funny noises.

(Man, running an eninge without the filterbox produces an overwhelming sound! Just for a second or so, don't get me wrong.. )
