Post air box clips/

Trying to replace airfilter on 86 3.2-

I can't get to the lower clip on the back of the box to take the filter out.

Any trick to this?

Hi Gerry:

I sold my '86 a year and a half ago, so I'm going from memory. But, I believe my '90 964 has the same air box anyway (I might be wrong)... You should be able to release the two rear clips by reaching around the right hand side of the air box. I believe they are in the same position on the back of the air box as they are in the front.

The metal clip itself stays on the car and the air box cover just has tabs to line up the cover with the rest of the assembly. I can snap a pic of my air box and post it if that would help...

Hope this helps,
Jay

Jay, thanks for your help on both posts.

My problem is my somewhat meaty forearms which don't quite fit to get to the back of the box, the oil cooler hose to the right of the hood hinge is the rela killer.

Liberal applications of pain and profanity eventually worked.

Gerry:

Glad to hear you were able to get the air filter changed. Next time (in 15,000 miles) should be easier!

Hi:
A lot of us have trouble with the air box clips, especially the rear ones. I wanted more access for other reasons on the right side of the engine ( to adjust the Koni's, better oil filter removal, and better access to right-side upper valve covers). What did I do? I sectioned the outer lid of the box so only a "band" exists. Now you can actually "see" the back clips, and gain access for all the other things. Ends up like a "cup" box lid.
