Question Air box snorkel removal?

Possibly dumb question froma newbie-

trying to replace the air filter on my '86 3.2.

After I pop the clips on the airbox, I can't open it enough to slide the old filter out because the snorkel hits the oil filler neck.

It looks like one has to pop off the snorkel with a screw driver but neither the owners manual or "101 projects" mentions this. I think once the Polyethylene in the snorkel warms up it will pop off easily but I see no marks indicating this has been done before.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks as always.

Gerry:

After unsnapping the clips, you should be able to wiggle the entire air box cover out of the engine bay. Then you can easily remove and replace the air filter. Once you get the hang of exactly which angle the cover slides out at, it's quite easy.

You should not have to remove the snorkle to service the air filter.

Good Luck,
Jay

Jay,

Thanks, I've tried wiggling but now that I no it works I'll wiggle the box more.

Did you undue the clips behind the cover? There are a couple back there that are kinda hard to see. And sometime when you unsnap them they remain loosely hooked.

If you have a factory airbox and all the clips are undone, you should have no trouble at all removing the cover. Certainly not from the oil fill tube.

Or better yet, take this opportunity to install a K&N cone filter housing. I don't think it really added much performance in my car. But the space it freed up in my engine room was well worth the cost. I can't believe the difference it made in accessibility.
