If you would do it over, what Y/M 911 would you choose?

Tim,
If you can locate and get your hands on the August 2003 edition of Excellence Magazine, you might find the answers to your questions. This issue contains the 1974 to 1989 market update by Bruce Anderson.
Bruce has always advocated buying "the best example you can find" in the price range you can afford. Having said that, Bruce goes on to say: "My personal choice, cost aside, would be a 1987-1989 Carrera 3.2 with the improved transmission and clutch." This is from a man with a wealth of knowledge about the Porsche marquee.
I can attest that I have been extremely happy with mine.

I have a less optioned cab - manual roof, manual seats... It feels much lighter (even being a cab) than some of the more optioned cars. I'm going to have to weigh it one of these days.

My first Porsche was an 85 coupe. I loved it but disliked the vague 915 tranny and weak synchros. I agree with Ducboy, the 87-89 variants were the best of the original 911 with their G50 trannies.
I eventually bought a 993 because I was hungry for more speed. I miss the manual steering and intoxicating early 911/Carrera sound, though.

I'm about to go check out that SC you posted. I've been talking to him for a few days now(the auction wasn't won) and it turns out he lives less than a mile from me.
My only problem with the car is the mileage of 164k. I was scared that may be a little high.
Have you learned anything about mileage on these cars?

I had a ppi done on that car. It wasn't the miles so much , but it needed more that I thought was reasonable for the price he was wanting. Good luck. The owner didn't have a lot of knoledge on the 911's so I also assumed he didn't work on it much which scared me even more.
Nice guy though. FWIW
Get a PPI

MMMM, Tough one!
Daily driver... newer the better in my opinion. I hear the G-50 tranny is nice, but the 915 is lighter and works well when properly used and maintained.
I am currently looking for a second Porsche to compliment my track car, and to be used as second daily driver status (sunny days), and prefer the pre 74 chassis. No matter what, get to know the car you are buying and save some dough for repairs.
Good Luck!

I've had an '87 cab and now have an '88 coupe...hard to beat the '87-'89 Carreras. I occasionally think about selling my '88 but I talk myself out of it. I'd love a 930 but a good friend of mine has one and they can be VERY expensive to maintain, not that mine is cheap.

Having both an 80SC and 88 Carrera, it is tough to decide. But if I were to choose anything from 74-89, I would do it with either an 81-83 Euro SC with the 930/10 motor or a Carrera Club Sport. Nothing else would do because I already have the more common variety. Except for an 89 Speedster for daily driver. As for 930's, any would do. 4 or 5 speed does not matter for me. With enough sick boost, either transmission will do. But honestly, any 911 produced between 66 and 98 will do for me. Anything produced after is for when I am elderly.

I couldn't tell if you were looking for a daily driver. If not, I would definitely say '88/'89 Club Sport. They eliminate all of the frills and electronic gadgets and leave you with pure Porsche driving enjoyment. They are sleepers in today's market but are a blast to drive.

I have an 89 Cab. If I had to do it all over again, I'd do it all over again. This car is the most fun one can have without getting undressed. The 89 Cab is also the best financial decision I ever made. This car is outperforming my stocks. It has cost me almost nothing in repairs and after 4 years and 50,000 km, it's worth a bit more than I paid for it. Did I mention it's lots of fun to drive?
Good luck
