Default Alternator

Hello, I am looking to buy a new 911 alternator, or a used one, the cost of new ones is very low considered to the cost of used ones genuine ones, are the new non oem(bosch valeo marshal) good or are they going to cause trouble ?

While I won't tell you which one to buy, I would advise you not to buy any rebuilt ones due to high rates of failures.

They are going to cause trouble. I had two aftermarket alternators in one year fail.
Decided to buy an OEM Porsche alternator, though expensive, and know it is going to do the job.

I got a new Valeo alternator from Pelican Parts in 2010. Perfect fit, a relatively straightforward DIY, and no problems in the six years since.

Can someone post a link to what they would buy?

Glad it's still doing its job.

Alternators here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg1.htm#item0. Be sure to select the year of your 911 to confirm fitment. If you have any questions let me know.

If you need help with the replacement be sure to check out our tech article here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...eplacement.htm.

You get what you pay for; no exceptions.

OK, now I am starting to worry about my rebuilt alternator. I bought it from Pelican, a Valeo, and it is going in the 3.2 that is going into my original 914-6. As you may know, the alternator on a Six is right up to the firewall between the cabin and engine compartment. Makes it a tough swap once the engine is installed. The last thing I want, after having the car painted, is to have to pull the alternator out once the engine is installed. I am wondering if I should send out this rebuilt alternator to a local rebuild shop to have them go through it to make sure it was rebuilt correctly to begin with, based upon the above comments.

Is the Bosch Reman here - http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg1.htm#item0 - not a good one?

So following up on my post above, I actually took my rebuilt alternator (from Pelican) and took it to a shop that actually rebuilds them on-site. They found some bad solder joints and said they believe the alternator would have failed in short order. They also replaced an internal bolt that was extra long for no real reason. They re-soldered the joints correctly and then bench tested and it worked like a champ. Hopefully that will prevent any future trouble for me. Cost me $90 - well worth it. I should say that Pelican is just a re-seller and never actually had their hands on this alternator. It was drop shipped from their supplier. The first alternator Pelican had sent was actually damaged and could not be installed at all. The box was perfect and yet the actual shaft of the alternator was bent - so absolutely damaged before it was boxed up.

Glad to hear this. I just ordered one and hope I enjoy the same trouble-free experience.

I agree. If you have a trusted electrical shop nearby get yours rebuilt. That is what I did 20 years ago.

The large volume "rebuilders" just toss any metal fasteners they have at it, hose it down with molten solder, run it thru a dishwasher or something, and put it in a nice box.
