1976 911S evaluation help

Default 1976 911S evaluation help

Good Morning Everyone,

I am currently looking at a 76 911S and I wanted to get some input on it.
I just don't know if the $25k asking price is fair for this model of car.
It runs and drives and is sitting right at 100K miles on it. No rust and has always been a CA car.

I am not worried about fixing any mechanical issues or the paint because I used to do those things as a living.

so my question is: is $25k for a 76 911S with 100K miles on it a good deal?

I plan on repainting the car and doing the interior.
Any input would be appreciated

if you plan a color change that is veery expensive, so you'd want to pick up a low cost car

if this car ever had thermal reactors on it (likely if a Calif. car) it can have engine issues that are hard to detect even after removal - long thread on this recently

why not find a bondowagen SC?

Man, when I first read the title I saw "'76 911E" and thought $25K was a bit rich. A '76 911S would be an awesome platform for a hot rod and $25K would be a bargain entry point.

Could you explain what a bondowagen SC is? is that just a bondo'd up SC?


I don't mind doing a color change I have a spray booth and facilities to paint.I used to be a suspension engineer for a Porsche race team a while back. I just don't know much about the older Porches and their value/ pit falls.

I'm currently doing this to a Cayman I picked up a few weeks ago

yes, a bondo'd up SC

and it sounds like you have the space, and ability to deal with that - as long as you have the time...

there is a buying guide pinned at the top of the forum thread list

a '74 would be the optimal mid-year purchase IMHO - it is rel. unloved b/c of the Mg cased motor and the fugly bumpers, but is fairly light and never had thermal reactors to mess up that Mg case; you can put FG parts on it to make it look like an early car and save more wt. to boot

it also sounds like you may want to do some suspension mods?

late fall and winter is a great time to look for a used sports car, have fun and let us know of any questions

Might be a good deal; it all depends on condition and what your plans are for it: restoration or a hot-rod.

Color changes knock 30-35% off a car's value, all things being equal.

I am unsure of what I want to do to the car. I just enjoy working on cars and cleaning them up/repainting/restoring them to a decent condition. I usually do motorcycles but have moved back to my roots of working on cars.

I don't really know my plans. Strip it down, paint it, put some Sparco's or Recaro's in it and make the engine run decent enough for someone else to enjoy driving it. I just enjoy working and restoring cars and bikes.
