Default 911 brake rotors

Was the brake rotor on 1980's vintages of 911 a cross-drilled rotor or a plain cheek rotor? Was a cross-drilled rotor an option?

Plain.

All SC/Carrera's had plain rotors. Only the '78-'89 930's had cross-drilled (and much larger) ones.

I'm not a huge fan of drilled rotors. I've cracked a number of them on my Corvette track car. i think it's a weight thing though. Most of us with heavier cars have given up on drilled and gone to slotted. Big cars just don't seem to like drilled rotors.

Now. I have drilled on my 911 and never had an issue. Again, I think it's a weight thing.

Bottom line is I don't see any advantage of drilled over slotted. Drilled rotors have become a cosmetic thing for the cruise night folks. It seems that the serious folks use slotted.

When talking to the Brembo engineers they felt that drilled discs offered a slight advantage in cooling but the slotted rotors offered increased durability.

Here's something I wrote back in 2014 on all of this.

^+1 what he said. Plus the drilled clog up quickly if using soft track pads. Not sure what that does but I can't imagine it helps. Slotted just don't do that.

Agree with everything above. If it's just a street car I'd stick with a plain rotor...for track use, slotted is the way to go.
