Hydraulic Tensioner Upgrade

Hi all,
I'm due to collect my first 911 in the next week. It's a 79 3.0L SC Targa Sport with 50k documented miles.
I keep reading about upgrading the tensioners to later hydraulic type. Is this a diffficult job to do? The kit seems to be reasonably priced in the UK.

thanks this is brilliant....but typical. Now I've seen Wayne's book, I'll have to order it....and this is how it started with the 928 - spending hard earned £'s before I even took delivery :-)

101 projects is a great book. Most of the pictures and descriptions that Wayne uses in the book are from an SC he is working on. I found that Amazon.com has a good price on the book and you can "package" a few related books together and get a great deal (that's what I did).
Have fun (an yep, I know the feeling about spending before delivery, ha!, ha!)

Amazon here I come. BTW the spend bug has already started to take effect...new '911' overcarpets, Hydraulic tensioner set (both sides) Targa front and rear seals and a full set of door seals all ordered this a.m.......oh, I also picked up a copy of Haynes 911 resto' manual.
Well, you have to be prepared !

Installation of the Carrera (oil-fed) tensioners is a fairly straight forward job. It was the very first upgrade I made to my car, and an essential one at that. I like the Bentley SC shop manual for instructions. (The OE Porsche tensioner kit comes with no instructions at all.)
The most important thing to observe during the job, is that the chains must **never go slack** when you are removing, or replacing a tensioner. If somehow the chains skip a tooth, your valve timing will be seriously affected (ie:engine damage at start-up).

I would also consider replacing the chain ramps at the same time - personally I would also change the chains but that needs careful work. Not sure on your model if you need the extra spacer, I would recommend fitting the new style idler arms (930.105.509.00 left & 930.105.510.00 right).

Guys,
I've ordered the tensioner set from Porscheshop here in the UK @ £159GBP per side. As far as I can tell, (and they say they are complete kits) the tensioner kit includes the new style arms but the chain ramps are £7.50GBP extra ea....so that's another pre-delivery purchase to be made :-)
As the car has only covered 50k miles...should I change the chains at the same time? They are only £32GBP per side additional...so it won't exactly break the bank.
Gee, the timing belt on water pump job on my 928 was much easier. Phone up, order the bits, fit and forget!

No chain replacement required at 50K; and probably not at even 100K!
And yes, it is certainly a good idea to replace the ramps while you're in there.
A good shop manual will describe the process of re & re'ing the ramps. It is a bit difficult to access a couple of them. You can drop them into the crankcase if you're impatient.
Of the 6 ramps, 1 is slightly different, and goes in it's own special location. And they do have a specific orientation that you must be sure of during installation.
