What would you offer for this 78 911?
Was tipped on this 911 sitting in a barn. I believe its a 78 with 71,000 original miles, have not seen it in person yet. I want to be prepared when I arrive with numbers. I was told it runs but needs a battery and some minor parts missing off the motor. If infact it has a operable motor with the current miles and a clean carfax. Whats a fair market value on this car? What would you offer the owner with the consideration that it will need work?

I'll leave it up to others to chime in on value, I am not good at that. However, a couple of quick observations that may be useful:
1) The badge says "911S", which would suggest this may be a pre-78 car. 1978 was the year the 911 SC was launched. If this is in fact really an "S", then it would be 1974 to 1977.
2) If it is an "S" with the original 2.7 motor, then there exist more potential issues on the motor side to be wary of, particularly head studs pulling out of the magnesium case. There are good 2.7s out there, but it is generally a less bomb-proof motor than the 3.0 of the SC.
3) No oil fed chain tensioner update.
4) All the information decals from the engine cover latch area, which suggest this car may have been repainted (not a deal breaker, but it would be important to evaluate the quality of the repaint)
5) "Missing parts" included half the airbox and air filter. Not the ideal condition to run the motor in.
Single biggest question in my mind would be the motor (2.7 or 3.0)

Get a PPI from a tech who knows these vintage cars. If an SC, could be low 30's to 50's depending on condition. These pics make her look like a nice 5-10 footer. It is surprising she on,y has 71k miles and is in disrepair. That is suspect to me.

Aside from above comments - no engine compartment stickers could indicate repaint.
Non-sunroof (?) coupe carries some extra value.
Interior condition - sport seats? dash cracks?
But IMO that is in no way a $40-$50k car, I'd say $30k MAX on a good day if a 3.0L given other info

Looks like it has an SC valance, so it would be a 78 and it has the 3.0 too. Definitely repaint. Air boxes run $500.00 for a new one FYI. The badging looks like the SC badging just missing the C. probably came off when it did the respray. Take a wheel off and inspect if they are real fuchs. Has the SC flares. The whale tail is like a 75/76 tho I think.
25k?

I would not offer anything without a PPI...why has it been sitting for so long?
A 3.0 will run reasonably well with broken head studs.
That collection of 'stuff' by the charcoal canister looks like mice/rats have been active...how's your wiring loom?
Without a PPI and the other unknowns 18 k period.
