Default Another scored cylinder anyone have this luck 😁

Hey fellas I have an 08 targa 4s purchased October 2010 CPO w 30,000 and Within a month ticking noise , cyl 4 scored, rebuild from Porsche places.

Now at about 22k on rebuild noticed white smoke at start up w oil consumption having to add quart every 300-400 miles. Bore scoped at dealer and they show me video that cyl 6 scored and need short block again. Ever happen to anyone ? Any reason why the 997 develops scored cyl?

Other question : once this is fixed I'm think of selling and interested in 07/08 997tt w Metzger engine as these seem to be much more reliable

Any thoughts appreciated thanks !

Its a common problem with the M96-based engines.

Steve is correct. The cylinders go out of round and the noise you hear is piston slap
due to wear on the skirts. Best bet-sleeve it.

The '08 has an M97 engine with the improved IMS bearings but still subject to scoring. I think this is caused by inadequate lubrication during high-G turns. I think oil starvation sets in at about 0.8 G turns with M96 / M97.

A completely new and much improved engine (9A1) with no IMS, direct injection and a much improved oiling system has been used since about 2009. All of these issues seem to be solved with the 9A1.

All of the above applies to the 996 / 986 (with M96 motors) and the 997.1 and 987.1 (with M97 motors). 997.2 and 987.2 (starting in 2009) have the much improved 9A1 motors as do the 991.1 and 981.1 cars.

None of the above applies to 996 / 997 GT or Turbo cars which used a completely different engine because Porsche knew that 0.8 G turns would not be adequate for these higher-performance cars.

These are really questions for the knowledgeable people in the water cooled forum

This is definitely a water cooled issue across all platforms. The cayenne is suffering from this also.
