There are a lot of cars heading to a lot of auctions in Arizona, and a lot of them are 911s. But is Steve McQueen responsible?

For specific cars that McQueen owned? Yes.

For 911's overall popularity since the late 60s? No.

Decades of racing heritage, iconic styling and unique driving experience are what really drive its popularity.

The 993 board has a great thread on the auction results. To summarize, the truely perfect cars have been picked through. At this point the auction houses are selling the B rated cars. The cars available for auction are cars that were just forgotten second hand garage queens that have been polished up and had a few parts replaced to make them presentable. One Rennlister only saw 10 cars worth bidding on...that says alot.

I was at B-J last week and saw a few 911s. They were widebody converted mid-year cars that were beat up and beat down.

The kind of stuff Race911 talks about he did in the '80s.
