Default Third Brake Light

Does the factory wiring on an '85 Carrera have the provision for the addition of a third brake light, without having to splice into the harness? In other words, are the connectors there, so that a factory third brake light could simply be "plugged in"?

Thanks!

I don't have the wiring diagram handy. However, I did add a third brake light to my 81SC, and it's very easy to route a wire from the rear Window area into the engine compartment, however, it did require splicing wires. I originally tapped into the brake light wires, and found that that brake light dimmed compared to the other brake light. So I hooked up one of the $10 Hella relays, and everything worked fine.

I was at the dealer in 85-86 , we added alot of 3rd brake lights none of the early cars had the wiring. Even the 1st few 86s. The wiring is easy. Most people prefered the light at the bottom of the glass instead of at the top where it would interfer with your rear view mirror. When you add it tape the glass off dont mess up the defroster lines and paint the area where the frame sticks to the glass. If you dont, people will see your tape. Not pretty. The factory frame came with white double sided tape.

Jim is right, that white tape is ugly. However, on mine I removed the white tape, went to a body shop and got a foot of gray/black double sided tape to use in it's place, and it worked fine.

I did not like any of the aftermarket third lights. I have an 82 911 Targa

As I am a Harley Dude as well, I found a neat aftermarket LED light that is customarily used as a brake light on motorcycle license plate frames. It is approx 6 inches long and maybe 1/2 inch wide. I have a Targa and mounted it simply with a couple of screws. It is tucked away nicely but shows well when needed.

Rather than hasseling tapping into wires, I ran a separte set of wires from the brake light switch.

I think the light ran about $35.00 to $40.00

Go to any good aftermarket Harley shop. If they don't have it, they can probably order from Custom Chrome or Drag Specialties.

If you go that route but have difficulty finding the light, let me know and I check it out for you.

AutoZone also has a nice 12" LED light. It's only about $18. I am thinking about using that. Since mine is a coup though, I don't have the space behind the targa bar to mount it so it will be visible in my rear view mirror.
